I dont think their is one that is labled "the best" but most people on these forums like either the Escort 8500 X50, or the V1.

Visually, the V1 by far imo.

Are you kidding me? The V1 is all function and zero form...it's just ugly as hell. It's built like a cockeyed brick. Now the Whistler...THAT thing looks like something outta Star Trek. Not so good at detecting radar, but looks good trying.

i beg to differ on V-1 being ugly. While most other companies "try"to look so darn futuristic, the V-1 is solid and consistent in looks.

    and it works great!

Are you kidding me the whistler is great at detecting radar. Just ask happya$$ he thinks much differently now. Don't make false statements especially since you never owned a whistler probably.

It is not a false statement, Whistler does not make a top radar detector.

Just check the results of the testing.

Compared to the V1? Testing puts it miles ahead of the Whistler.

I think he was just trying to point out that they are making some detectors worth mentioning.

And at a price point you really can't beat. The top 3 are definitely better, but Whistler has some good decently priced detectors.

Looks and performance aside, its controls for me, only V1 before Bel got smart with the STI, can be visor mounted.
Rice grain buttons on the top don't cut it.
Benefits are up high, easy to get to mute or any other function, LEO's and thieves don't see it as it looks like a garage door opener on a visor. CD case concealment possible.

What I have found out about the Whistler Pro 78 thus far is this:

It gives you the most bang for the $$$$. It is not as sensitive as a V1 BUT my encounters thus far with it I have had more than enough time to slow down. You can not beat buying an XTR 690 for $115 SHIPPED. I used to think there was no such thing as a budget detector and used to think that I had to spend $400+ to have a detector that provided me with enough time to slow down but the Pro 78 has changed my mentality. It has great ramp up, good features, good range, and outstanding CS support! What else can one ask from a detector?
RIP Duncan my BELOVED black lab son 8/7/99-3/23/11. I will miss you DEARLY.
