    Default Radar firmware updates ?

What's the process someone would have to take to get their detector updated with the latest firmware. How does this work? If I were to buy a radar through here and later a new firmware is released, how do I would I get the detector updated? Is this something that is important?

It depends on the manufacturer. Some (mainly inexpensive ones) do not allow any types of updates at all.

Most, however, offer upgrades where people must send in an upgrade fee along with their detector.

A few (i.e. Whistler) provide totally free upgrades to the firmware -- you just send them the detector and they'll cover the rest.

I'm thinking about getting an escort, how are they when it comes to updates?

They do offer firmware updates for when they are necessary, but do charge for it. I don't recall exactly how much they charge, but I recall it being pretty hefty though for my wallet.

Escort charges $59.95 for service to the X50. It might be more depending on what needs to get fixed? Not sure I've never sent one in to be repaired. I heard it used to be $80. Updates aren't really useful in my opinion for the Belscorts. The new X50 Rev 6.1 uses a whole different antenna than the Rev 5, so Rev 5 users can't really upgrade their detector to 6.1 since it would require a whole entire new piece of hardware.

If you're worried about upgrades and such, you may want to consider a Valentine One. Supposedly they have the best customer service in the radar industry and a lot of people are very satisfied with their V1's. I don't know how much the charge is to upgrade/update. Some people say they have had their updates for free. I think they do charge for a hardware upgrade though.

Most of the stuff I've heard, the V1's upgrade is on the order of $50-100 depending on the scope; Free would be quite rare to see.

Haha they tuned nascar's V1 for free. Look under the V1 forum and check out the 'OUTSTANDING!!!' topic.

As much as I hate to say even though I just got a X50, I'll probably get a V1 next year or later on just for kicks.
