From my high school parking lot, I saw a 50% radar detector usage on an average day, just from looking for telltale suction cups on the windshield....

Most of them that I see were Cobras, some people were good and bought X50's or V1's, but most of them were stupid enough to leave them on the windshield 24/7.

I've talked with a lot of people with Cobras, and it usually goes like this:

<me> So why'd you choose this detector?
<him> I was browsing in the store, and it looked like a really good detector. It had a big list of features compared to the others, and looks more professionally designed.
<me> Are you aware that Cobras have highly inconsistent Ka-band performance (the band that is used here 95% of the time), emits a lot of unfriendly radar signal leakage, and is considered one of the WORST brands?
<him> Works great for me. I got a lot of saves. Just yesterday I was driving past the corner of A and B, and right at the corner my detector went off Ku band, and like a block later I saw this cop on the side of the road, holding this radar gun thing and squinting and aiming at me.
<me> Err... there's a CVS ... and... Ku band.... and.... that's a laser gun... just never mind.

Now, what about the X50/V1 folks, are they any better? Sadly not:

<me> Hey! I notice you have a fantastic detector. What led you to choose it?
<him> Well this guy I work with knows this friend whose cousin said that the Valentines are the best. So I got one. Man this thing works so great, just yesterday I was at the corner of A and B and a half a block before the intersection I got this K-band alert and...
<me> OK OK, THAT'S ENOUGH! JUST F****ING SHUT UP ALREADY!

With that said, I never causally asked anyone about their detector... ever again ;-)

Yea kinda of like me..I have asked 2 stranger dudes about there rd's...One dude had a x50 red and another guy had a rx65...(2 seperate times and people)When i asked them about this site, they both sorta were quiet, but they were very rd smart...Is how I know they both are members here just by the responses and knowledge they gave me...haha..

I wont be asking nobody else anymore either though unless I see a v-1 and umm, it will go sorta like this, "Wanna sell your v-1 to me for $25.00"...
    Someone dummy might just bite....

Y'all do realize this is a bit obscure as far as things to take a liking in go? I mean, once you get hooked you may never want to leave but how many people get so obsessed with radar detectors?

I can't say anything about forum-induced obsession as bitog has led me to hoarding 272 qts of oil in my garage....

I would NOT expect anyone but us to be this nerdy about detectors, but maybe it's just me, but before I invest in a hundred or more dollars on a device that I must depend on from costing me speeding tickets -- I'd do some research other than amazon.com buyer comments.....

When you're computer shopping, you look around for independent benchmarks, user comments, and so on. Why wouldn't you do the same for a radar detector?

Oh, no, I agree. But when you think about the number of radar detector users...then the number of those who actually know the good units...then the number of those who spend time on the web...then the number of those who've found this site....then the number of those who've actually registered....

If you're doing research, you're ten times more likely to come across reviews on amazon or cnet where some nutjob thinks the rmr or the cobra are industry leaders..... Don't get me wrong. I found this place easy enough....

My general rule with shopping site reviews:

    (1) I ignore all positive comments
    (2) I do not write any positive comments

    And I've never looked back.
