Default Inside your RD: Escort Passport 9500i -- FCC ID QKL95M4

    Hi everyone,

Another of a series for all of the popular radar detector models.

Have fun posting your observations and comments regarding what you see!

    Best Regards,

    --Michael

The Escort Passport 9500i -- FCC ID QKL95M4

Below is a top side view of the internals:

The GPS receiver chip is the large shiny square chip. The entire GPS board is mounted above the main board on a large black plastic standoff.

Below is a bottom side view of the internals:

Note that this is the bottom side view and that the radar horn is mounted upside down! Bel and Escort don't do this very often, yet for the 9500i this provides a significant advantage. The upside down mounted horn gives it a strong downward flare which allows the 9500i to more easily pick up radar signals bouncing off of your vehicle's car hood. Also note that the PUI speaker features a circuit board plug at the end of its wire leads, rather than simply soldering the speaker leads to terminals on the circuit board. This makes the speaker very easy to replace if it blows due to extreme heat.

Below is a view looking into the upside down mounted horn:

    Best Regards,

    --Michael

Yeah, you have to travel forward in time to get this latest firmware version! Actually these are all FCC photos of a preproduction unit sent in for testing for FCC compliance. I guess Escort had to put something on the sticker to show where the serial number would be.

This capacitor acts like a small battery, yes, but mainly when the unit is OFF, and it's for GPS electronics only. If there was no this cap, every time when you turn off 9500i and then on - GPS need to "find" sattelites again, what takes about 1 min or longer. Note, that if time of "no using" was shorter than 1-1.5h, it takes only few seconds. This is what this cap is for.

Mem-Tek PLEASE PLEASE for the love of God and all that is holy stop making crap up. The 9500i does not have LNA's. The STI and V1 are the only ones that currently due. There is a reason why STI has two antennas, yeah that is right to bypass VR's patent! By the way nice pics
RIP Duncan my BELOVED black lab son 8/7/99-3/23/11. I will miss you DEARLY.

They're not his pics. These are taken from the FCC website, and have some commentary added to them.

My HUGE APOLOGIES! I edited my post, replacing "LNA" with "microstrip antenna".

Looking at Jimbonzzz's labeled photo of the LO circuit board within the STi's dual antenna, I can see why Bel had to resort to a dual antenna design. I don't think that the STi's dual antenna design had anything to do with trying to get around VR's patent since VR's patent is specifically for a front and rear facing dual antenna. Why, for the love of God and all that is Holy, did you bring up the STi's dual antenna design when I didn't mention it at all within my post? Oh yea -- I forgot -- you've got to be the one who knows it all.

I did take the time to strip the pictures out of the PDF documents, restore the correct color balance, brightness, contrast and gamma, and then process them to remove most of the original JPEG artifacts.
