Using your radar to keep you safe

If you have stopped a violator or are directing traffic around an accident scene, consider leaving your radar unit on. Many drivers still rely on their radar detector to tell them when the police are watching. This same principle applies when you are not actively monitoring speeding vehicles, and drivers will slow down when their detector goes off, often before they can even see your emergency lighting.

Slower speeds increase your safety. Keep it between the ditches, and get home in one piece!

Using radar during foggy weather

When it is so foggy out you can't see 20 feet from your vehicle, turn your radar on. That way you will get advance warning a vehicle is approaching.

I personally like when LEOs use they're radar units in this manner. Especially CO in school zones.

All jokes aside police def need to use there radar to better warn drivers of upcoming threats. Just yesterday somone at my school was hit by a car (it was a hit and run btw) and is now in critical condition. Today my school put up a your speed is radar sign. I know that i am gonna drive by the area slower now that my V1 will be screaming.

I feel like the NYSP can be good about using there radar to warn of threats or road work, but i think all police agencies could take it a step farther.

Hmm, didn't occur to me radar could be used that way. That way you hear the Doppler tone way before you can even see the car.

I'll second this.... When my detector goes off I slow down.
Not only does this make me a safer driver and remind me
I'm going a little too fast but it protects the Leo as he is
out of his patrol car handing out the citation.

If big rigs were still allowed to have radar detectors they could get advance warnings of accidents ahead by the LEOs radar. This is not the case so I must wonder how many lives have been lost to increase ticket revenue.

I say make RDs mandantory in big rigs & eliminate chain reaction accidents in bad weather.

Truckers are placed under a lot of pressure by their employers to
get their load to a certain destination by a certain time so they are
going to speed when possible, ( No offense to any Drivers out there ).
I understand your delima and that's just the way it is.
If they were aloud to use detectors, I feel it would increase safety
not hinder it.....

It would keep the bugs off the Glass and the Bears off your @ss.

I can see their training manual now:
I/O for when you run traps.
C/O for when you don't mean it.

I find the practice of the use of C/O while on partol vary highly with agency.

Over here, WilCo Sheriff / RRPD always run C/O 34.7 driving around.
APD never have their radar on when they are driving. Back in the old days when I had my very first detector in high school, circa 1996, APD always ran C/O K Band. I suppose there has been a policy change, to have them only I/O Ka Band, as needed.

anyone know if in israel or other countries in the area always keep radar on? I remember reading somewhere (possibly here) that they're required to always keep their strobes on
