Default Laser (Other types of laser available??)

As far as I know the laser used by cops are all handheld or have to be aimed at the cars to get a reading. Are there laser equipment that cops use where they simply sit in their car and can get a reading?? Thanks forum.

Because I got a speeding ticket where the cops claimed that they clocked me using laser and it was at night, but they were sitting in their car.

Nope, not in the near IR band (e.g., 904nm) anyway.

There is no such thing as a "dash-mounted lidar" and moving lidar... yet.

However, it may be very possible that the LEO either had his driver side or passenger side window down and was targeting vehicles with his handheld lidar gun through the open window or he might have even just been targeting through the windshield, which isn't impossible with some guns. Both would be possible sitting in the comfort of his driver seat.

Sure. The cop could either be sitting in his seat perpendicular to the road and target totally unaffected out of an open window. Or, he can be targeting through his windshield and still obtain readings, though it won't lock as instantaneously and gives laser detectors and drivers much more time to react.

I guess it can always be a possibility for them to aim throuhg the back windshield of their car since they were not perpendicular to the position of my car at the time. But I did read online that with laser it is best not to have anything in between such as window since it may cause error in the reading of the device

It makes it more likely for them to fail to lock onto you except at very close distances, but it won't cause false readings or prevent readings altogether.

I'll bet if you could get ahold of the manual for the particular laser he was using, there might be some warning or disclaimer in there that would warn against inaccurcies with methods like this. If it did, I would present it as evidence in the court case.

You can also shoot through a side mirror. You just shoot the reflection of the oncoming car. Of course, I don't know how well this would hold up in court, but it's definitely possible.

I was reading about LIDAR on this manual (page 11 pdf document) saying that LIDAR cannot operate through any glass which is surprising. http://www.cobra.com/pdf/RADAR/ESD6050LE_MANUAL.pdf
