Default Removing RDs for Theft Prevention and Detuning

So, I was telling this girl at work that I take my V1 out of my car here at work everyday because we have a minor theft problem, due to being in a less than stellar neighborhood. She tells me that "they" told her it basically detunes it and that it shouldn't be moved around a lot.

I guess, in a way, I can see it being a possibility, but not anymore than the bouncing or movement in the vehicle. Any idea if that's just BS? What generally makes these go out of tune and how often should they (V1) be returned for service?

Also, she was saying her RD made her drive in circles to get it to work, so it must have some direction display or something, because GPS or a regular RD wouldn't need that nonsense. I've only seen the driving in circles in cars with certain displays for N,S,E,W.

I tried to tell her a regular RD doesn't need you to drive in circles, but she insisted that because she had it in her manual they were all that way. I have no idea what she owns, but she said it was 200 dollars.

Detectors do go out of tune over time and climate changes, but taking it down and putting it up should not cause this to happen.

She probably has a detector with a compass, which often times requires a calibration routine of driving in a fixed radius circle a set number of time. It *IS* true that the calibration is only valid for that specific mounting position -- if you remount it like an inch higher, the compass will be off. I have two Whistlers with compasses and I take them down from the bracket and remount them every trip, and my compass is fine.

No offense but the girl you work with is an idiot you should never leave your rd up in any neighborhood. Think about it your v1 is worth + 400bucks (I am not sure it wasn’t in my price range) it is dumb to leave something worth any amount of money in view. Honestly you want to make your car look like a terrible target theives look for little extras I have seen people leave phones, RD's, petty cash, even GPS units up in their cars its just dumb.

My guess is, is that she has a Cobra. My first RD was a Cobra xrs-9700  ( what an idiot i was) and i had to drive in a circle to get the compass set. At least I found this forum and realized what Cobras were. Thank god for people like Escort and Valentine Research.

Depends on the area. In a small town with near to no theft, and where nobody knows how much a V1 can catch on eBay, you wouldn't have much of a problem leaving it in the window.

In a city, however, take it down.
