A radar detector is my way of actively protesting the bogus speed limits that we have because we allow bad drivers on our roads in unsafe vehicles and on cell phones. I also know that my car can stop from 90-100mph in the same distance as the semi going 70-80mph (in Europe they cannot go over 60 or so). I speed 99% of the time I am in a car. However, I do not tailgate, I do not run red lights, I do not talk on the cell phone, I check my mirrors every 5 seconds, I use my hazards till traffic behind me slows when high speed traffic ahead slows abruptly, I always use blinkers (even when I occasionally weave b/c people fix themselves in the far left lane and go two mph over the PSL), I check my tires and lights for proper function every two weeks, and I move over for pedestrians and stopped vehicles when safe to do so (regardless of lane violations -- saftey is more important)
But that semi can see a whole lot further ahead than you and will probably stand on the pedal minutes before ya too :wink:Originally Posted by 9500ier
I concur with the former but disagree with the latter. I typically give as much heed to brake lights 3 cars ahead as I do for the car directly in front of me. At highway speeds I typically find myself touching the brakes before the two cars directly in front of me. I also watch adjacent lanes for heaving braking because you can see farther ahead with the given angle. I am not suggesting that I am the best driver, but then again I do not have much to compete with in this country. I would say I am in the 98th percentile.. haha.
Because some RD users ARE crazy speeders. A lot of folks see detectors as a way to get out of tickets and ultimately not taking responsibility for their own actions. They feel they can do whatever they damn well please on the road because the traffic rules suddenly no longer apply to them since they have a black box that occasionally beeps and "warns" them when it's time to slow down. This type of driver usually ends up getting caught sooner or later. A buddy of mine is a good example. He got a ticket about 6 months ago. He then bought a Crapra and told me that he feels like he is speeding MORE because of it. I didn't have the heart to explain to him the multiple errors in his thinking. He'll figure it out eventually.
I agree completely.Originally Posted by 9500ier
Just because you (any of you good drivers) can drive fast doesn't mean that driver next to you can. A lot of people get scared of fast drivers. This is a problem in USA. Anybody can get a driver's license without proper experience. I know a lot of people getting license by knowing how to pass the driving test. Majority of drivers in USA are bad drivers. Stop comparing speed limits with Europe. Some old folks cannot go anywhere without the car and yet they cannot drive. I know some drivers that afraid to drive on the freeway and I try to explain to them that it is much easier to drive on the freeway, no lights, no pedestrians.
There should be a mandatory traffic school with specific number of driven hours before one could take a driving test.
All you need to pass a driving test is insured and registered car.
To many drivers owning a RD is a hobby and companion for the road.
well said... This is very true... I typically go about 5 to 10 over the PSL myself. The only ticket I have gotten was in a laser speed trap over a hill at night!!! Holy cra P!!! How do ya beat that?? Well needless to say as soon as I get back from the Middle East (where I am deployed to now) around mid Feb. I am going to get LI to counter this new threat in my area. I got the ticket right before I left while doing about 7 MpH over the PSL 65 at night in Texas. I was really mad falling victim to the system like that. I couldn't believe it when it happened. I had the cruise control set and the traffic was light. Lucky for me I have not received any tickets proir to this incident so after taking a drivers training course online I got it off the record. Another ticket however and I am up the creek without a paddle... I knew that as soon as the Laser Alert went off on the X50 that I was screwed so I just dis-engaged the cruise and didn't touch the brakes at all. I didn't wanna let the cop know I had a RD and seeing since it was night and all, my hitting the brakes as soon as he hit me would have probably been a bad idea. Oh well.... All this money that I am getting over here and being single, I am ready to drop BIG $$$$ into some countermeasures to ensure that this doesn't happen again... getting a ticket for doing 72 in a 65 to me is complete crap and to be honest it just pi$$es me off. BTW since the LI website is banned over here can anyone give me the cost for LI.... I would like to get Quad LI but I might have to stick with dual at first if it's too expensive. If someone could drop me a PM or something with the details of cost, that would be great!! ThanksOriginally Posted by JDS

For Christmas, she had given him a Bel Vector RD!

A lapse in his usual better judgment? Clearly, he was not applying the concept of countermeasures properly.
I suggest those who use RDs to drive smarter with regard to radar will be under represented in the group of folks getting pulled over. Those who drive dumber will be over represented
Cops impressions about those who use RDs, as a result, will be shaped by the latter group.
