    Default My Introduction...

Well, I'm new here, I've read bits n pieces of information from here when I google stuff..I thought I'd join since I've got a question.....

Question is...I was just given a Whistler 1748 (I believe that's the model) and I know nothing about it, I found the online manual though, but how old is this thing and is it worth putting in my car?

Also, what are some good RDs that are clean installs? Like, I'm thinkin somethin that's not visible, like a RD that's a rearview mirror or somethin that's similar to that. With dataloggers, gauges, and all the other engine monitoring devices, I'm lookin for somethin that's clean lookin.

Jammer suggestions? How about GPS? Can't those (GPS) interfere though?

GPS devices do not interfere with radar detectors, a lot of us use them. Most of them, so far as I know, don't emit any signals whatsoever, they just receive. Although some of them broadcast FM signals to your car's speakers and some can now communicate with each other. But none of these signals are on a wavelength that would interfere with radar detectors.

A hardwired RD mounted high is clean looking, sexy to! Just not a Cobra.

what JDS said is true, GPS will not adversely affect your RD. Personally, I like Garmins for GPS.

Where can I find pics of peoples installs?

:Edit: Oh yeah, and how well will the Whistler 1748 get the job done?

just look through the various forums. most will have install pictured labeled right in the subject line. there are alot in the v1 forum right now, and will give you a good idea of where to mount yours

Can any of these be taken apart and, running leads from the sensor locations, remotely mount just them to the windshield and rear window (If device is equipped), making a smaller "unit" attatched to the location, then having the actual RD unit tucked away somewhere.......or are these things already built as compact as possible?

e.g.:Take apart RD, remove sensors, solder wire to that location, run wire up to mounting location, solder sensor to end of wire, mount and tuck RD in glove box or under visor or where ever.

Just a thought, I haven't taken one apart yet to see if it's do-able

You can... but it would typically be quite annoying. There are remote-mount units that come as you describe but they are overpriced.

It's simply not do-able: in general, the "sensors" are highly integrated into the main circuit board with no practical way to separate them and still have a working detector.

The closest thing you could do would be to remote mount the entire unit and remove the display and buttons to mount those where convenient. But for most high-end units, I'm pretty sure there are limits to the length of the wires for the display.
