if you live in CA then get the V1!!!
the 9500 is for eliminating falses but in CA you can turn off K and X band and not have any falses to begin with completely eliminating the point of having a 9500.

That’s not realy the point of the 9500I, the point of having the 9500I is to have an awesome RD like the V1. If you just turn off X & K then drive to an area they use it, you’re screwed.Originally Posted by bunny
X2 jimbonzzz. The V1 and 9500I appeal to two different markets/personalities, two different ends of the spectrum. If you can decide which you are now you will save your self allot of time.
1) Can't stand false alerts. BMW M sires. 9500I.
2) Notified of every potential threat or not. Mustang Cobra. V1.
There are a tone of other + & - for each but the above are the primary features.
CJR238: and what happens when CA (CHP) doesn't use K or X band, then what?
I have disabled X and K band on V1 and it's awesome. Get V1.![]()

He would use KA or Laser.
For my self I drive out of my KA-Laser-only area frequently, sure I could turn off K & X but if I forget to turn it back on and get hit with K or X im dead.
The V1 with its extra laser/sensitivity certainly is a plus for the CA laser/KA area, but there is something to say about a RD that knows potential threat areas by location, kind of like arrows for the year 2008.
If you never leave an area that only uses laser and KA than absolutely the V1, no need to spend the extra $50 for the other pretty cool features on the 9500I(seriously).
in other words: get a v1 unless you drive out of CA a lot.Originally Posted by CJR238

I would never be able to use any other detector after using the 9500i, there's just no way.
As far as laser and turning off bands it depends on what part of Northern California you drive in. West of Sac and people say Laser is in heavy use there. I don't drive in that area everyday, but maybe one weekend a month, I personally haven't seen any laser in use there, all Ka and all CO (Constant On) Ka, but keep in mind, like I said, I don't drive there even remotely as often as others here do.
East of Sacramento I drive almost all the time. I have never once seen Laser used in this part of Northern California. CHP almost always use CO Ka band here. I had the first exception to that happen yesterday when I ran into a CHP outside of Susanville on 395 who was actually using IO (Instant On) Ka radar. City and County Police use an equal mix of Ka and K band, so if you do ever drive East of Sacramento you absolutely do not want to turn your K band off in any detector.
Also, if you ever drive across the state line into Nevada (as many Northern Californians do) they have POP enabled guns, I definitely would not drive in Nevada with POP turned off like most people in other states who don't have this same risk suggest. Nevada Highway Patrol are all using the POP capable Ka band units and I have had POP alerts from NHP cars, not very common, but have had them and they were right there on I80 where you would likely be coming in from. Its a mix then of when they are using CO or IO Ka band, I see an equal amount of both used. NHP also loves to use VASCAR on I80 East of Reno. All City police tend to favor CO Ka band, County police in Nevada tend to use mainly CO K band (at least I have never seen them using anything else).
Again, I use the 9500i here and it works perfectly for me, I absolutely love the thing. Test results show the detection capabilities of the 9500i and the V1 to be almost identical, however, then the additional features and the capabilities of the 9500i completely walks away from the V1 and the V1 is no longer capable of being compared to the 9500i in any way. Both are priced the same, the decision of which to get was easy for me to make when trying to decide among those 2 in particular.
P.S.
I bought my 9500i on Amazon for $375.00, brand new sealed in the box, free shipping and no tax, so it was actually cheaper than the V1, not $50 more. It comes with risk though, if Escort finds out you bought yours on Amazon they void your warranty (Escort likes to control the resale price). However, mine is registered with Escort and under full warranty despite this. If you buy it on Amazon contact the company you are buying it from and they will register it for you and show it as being sold by their direct distributor (who is an authorized reseller for Escort).
To back-track a little, although I voted for the V1 initially (and I still think that this would suit your purposes better, particularly if you're not pursuing active laser jamming), I should qualify that statement.
Like the others here, I truly believe that the detector which is best for you is just that - one that is "best for YOU."
Any and all of the top-flight detectors will do the average (and even a bit beyond, in terms of how "spirited" you tend to drive) driver just fine, in terms of performance.
Many here regard the V1 as an "instrument of war" - however, in this role, it's plainly obvious that its optimization is beyond just selecting from one of three simple operational modes. I truly believe that to be able to extract the most out of the V1, its owner/user not only has to be intimately familiar with the instrument (in order to optimize the detailed settings of the advanced programming protocol), but that he/she must also be highly proactive as well as very experienced in being able to serve as the final filter for the incoming threat information, in order to not only discern "true" from "false," but to also assess how best to respond to each potential threat.
This is NOT to say that I think that the Bel/Escort (or other) products are for novice, inexperienced, or ignorant/stupid users - but rather that I believe that each detector has a use and a scenario for which it best fits, and that no-one can say, simply, that one or the other is "best," without considering precisely just those differences in scenario as well as the unique end-user's personal preferences and goals.
My locals use K band. It's still a possible threat. I saw a local pulling someone over on I-405 while both of my RD's are going crazy on K band. The CHP certainly uses only 34.7 Ka and laser, but to say that you can turn K band off is bad advice.Originally Posted by bunny
