Default How rare are Ka falses

I can count on one hand how many Ka rignals I've gotten. Yesterday as i turned onto a major road I kept getting a Ka alert about 1-2 bars on my v955 but it wouldnt hold on to signal. It would give an alert for about 2 seconds the go away for abot 3-4 seconds then come back...Is it most likely this was a false alert.

If it always stayed at 1-2 bars it sounds like there is a very very leaky detector, infront of, along side, or behind you that entire time.

On the higher end units 'Ka falses' are common when POP mode is being used (this goes for Belscorts units, and the V1), but the alerts seem to be significantly less often when POP detection on these units is turned off. With that said, some of the very leaky detectors can still cause such an alert.

Man is this rd stuff tricky..It is like myV955 is crying wolf...It makes it hard to know when to take your rd serious. Ido not use pop mode because Mem-Tek advised against it..So i guess it was another detector..I wish they would do away with those piece of craps. I also know my Rd should be working properly because i just got it back from Beltronics a week ago for a tune-up.

Using tech mode on your V995 would seriously help to distinguish false Ka band alerts from true Ka band alerts. American Ka band radar guns come in three flavors, 33.8, 34.7 and 35.5MHz. Once you know what the locals in your area use, finding false alerts is much easier. For instance, my locals use only 34.7 and 35.5, so something in the 34.3MHz range for example, would be a false alert. I use spec mode on my SRX for this exact reason and also to know the frequency of the true alerts when I see them.

They are tricky. Just takes time running with an RD. After a while you can start telling if an alert is a leo or not. I have been running with an RD for about 21 years now and I still have trouble. Especially if I get a weak Ka for an extended period of time. Is it a crappy RD or is it a leo behind me?

Don't we all wish crappy RD's would disappear!! :x
Outside Independence Hall when the Constitutional Convention of 1787 ended, Mrs. Powel of Philadelphia asked Benjamin Franklin, "Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" With no hesitation whatsoever, Franklin responded, "A republic, if you can keep it."

-Wilson Lil' Wil antennae. -Whistler 1585. -Whistler 1430. -Passort 3200 w/ 1000 laser detector (got stolen, bought one off ebay for nostalga).
-Cobra Trapshooter RD-31XX? (Can't remember silver/teardrop shape X, K only). -Cobra Trapshooter RD-3110 (my first RD in 1987, when Cobras were good, bought one off ebay for nostalga new in the box). -Kustom HAWK. -Kustom Falcon cordless K Band. -Kustom Talon.

I've seen this before several times and it wasn't a false, it was a LEO up the road a lot further heading the same direction I was shooting CO Ka at the oncoming traffic. You get the pings back when the signal bounces off those oncoming cars and comes back your way. When there are no (on coming) cars to reflect the signal back at both of you there is nothing to pick up so you get those dead spots in your detection.

You can even get a feel for how much farther up the road ahead of you he is by paying attention to when you get an alert like that, and then when you actually pass the oncoming car he was reflecting the signal back off of. Won't be exact, but look at your odometer when you get the alert, then make note of when the next car coming at you passes. This way you don't go speeding right up into the ass of the LEO traveling up the road ahead of you.

Extremely rare, since Sept '06 when I started using the STI, hundreds and hundreds of REAL Ka alerts but only 2-3 false ones, one place is a BMW dealership, they got the money to install expensive door alarms!

do cobra radar detectors leak a certain frequency then? like is there a one certain frequency to know its a cobra radar?

Not that I've noticed. My car is real low and the freeways are generally packed, so it's sometimes difficult to tell where the false is coming from. However, falses are generally nowhere near the usual 35.5 or 34.7.
