    Default Police use of devices.

Hi, I have a few questions for you veterans of radar/laser detector use. When do you see the most presence of either device? Like, when an officer is sitting in the median, he's more than likely either clocking with laser, or I/O radar and not constant on correct? I have used a cheapie radar detector that pretty much never went off to a cop sitting in the median except for 1 time where I got a laser hit. They were probably using instant on radar (or maybe laser and decided not to target me) I'm thinking that a good radar detector would have gone off from detecting any cars bieng targeted in front of me, does this work reliably enough for you guys to feel comfortable be it laser detection or I/O.

Laser use at night. I know that they CAN use laser at night, but do you see lots of it, or is it mostly radar? If radar, what kind I/O or C/O? What about miles of unlit highway. I would assume it's easier for the officer to use radar instead of laser as it would be more difficult to find a good place on the car to hit unless he doesn't mind staring at the headlights. Anyhow, any other info you can give me would be great. Thanks. RTT.

Here is the deal, A good detector will give you plenty of warning with the exception of laser. And I mean a Valentine 1, Passport 9500i, Bel Sti. But your driving habits will make all the difference. If you have a car going the same speed as you about 1/4 of a mile in front of you I/O generally will not be a problem. Especially since those detectors I have mentioned have excellent range. you will see them before they see you. As far as laser goes, If the detector goes off, hit da brakes! I have personnally been saved from laser twice due to a good detector.
But the best defense against laser is a laser jammer. Some models are pretty efficient at jamming laser. Check out The Guys of Lidar results on laser jammers to learn more about these. In any case laser and radar can only clock you from being either in front of you or from behind. And the LEOs have too many tactics to use to list them all. But again, a good detector, your eyes on the road and a rabbit will make a great combo. Add the laser jammer for another layer of comfort.

I don't think you can come to a conclusion on what type of radar is used in the median vs. the shoulder, etc., or if they are more likely to use one form or another on a motorbike. I think police pretty much use what they have.

Anyone standing on an overpass is using laser. This is probably the specificity you were looking for, unfortunately, is doesn't exist with radar.

Laser use is down at night because, I believe the headlights cause confusion to the gun, correct?

Also, laser has to be uninterrupted. So, on rainy days you most likely won't be seeing people hunched over their squad car shooting laser. Raining and someone with the pass. window down in the median? Brake!

What about laser use at night on a dark highway? Do you see more cops using radar or laser? Anyhow, I just picked up my V1 and I already love it, I just want to know what I may expect to encounter more, especially here in Ohio. I know they're big on laser here, but I would think they may tend to favor radar more after dusk.

A car's headlights are capable of interfering with the laser somewhat and only if the cop aims for the headlamps. If he aims for the front plate or a chrome grill, the headlamps do not do squat. As far as the laser itself, it is a pulse. The laser gun fires off a certain amount of pulses but only needs so many back. It use to be the gun needed to recieve 80% of those pulses back.
As far as living in ohio, the police use radar more than anything but you will encounter the laser just as much at night as you will in the day. What is worse is they can aim for the back of the car where it is harder for your detector to pick up, unless they nail the car in front of you. Just keep your eyes open and be smart about how and where you speed.

I have found that in Maryland they love to use laser in the evening on I95. Although they are pretty obvious just find out where the MSP head quarters are and watch out for them around those exits.

Thanks for the info. I would have assumed it would have been more difficult on the officer to use the laser at night, especially if it's really dark to find a target on the car (I have no front license plate) to hit.

There's light-up "SHOOT HERE" targets called headlights at night.

I live in a state without front license plates btu when I was driving through Ohio in the dark, they had no problems zapping me with laser from the median...
