If you go by the latest GOL testing, the 9500i had a bit better Ka range across the Spectrum compared to the Sti. With that said in real-life I don't think there would be an appreciable difference for the most part. I would buy the 9500i if RD's aren't illegal where you live.
Actually to be honest: I would skip that and go right to the 9500ix.
The 9500i is a better RD than the STi. Actual radar detection is very close, but the features of the 9500i are much more advanced than are those on the STi. The only reason to choose the STi over the 9500i is for Spectre invisibility. Also, the rampup for the STi blows.

yea the ramp up on the STi sucks...but it is a very good RD...but if u ever travel into VA or canada, or even texas (rd's are legal there but leos pick on rd users) i go STi
I agree with everybody's comments above. The 9500i is very slightly more sensitive on Ka band, but in the real world I just can't tell any difference in the performance of my STi and 9500i since their performance really is that close.
So the choice between the two boils down to your driving conditions, whether or not you need or desire stealth, and your personal preferences regarding each RD's set of features.
The remote version of the 9500 is stealth because it uses the same antenna as the Sti remote.

Actually, it is uses a simliar antenna. The 9500ci does not have the laser receiver and the StiR has it.
