Where are all the radar detectors?

From hanging out here, you'd get the feeling that everyone has radar detectors. But frankly, when driving the roads and highways of Dallas-Fort Worth, it's pretty darn hard to find anyone using one. Believe me, I try! I look at every dashboard and windscreen that passes me. I haven't seen a single radar detector on any car besides mine in at least a month. I hit traffic with Ka radar all day long and never see a brake light come on.

I think the threat of radar detectors is grossly overstated by law enforcement. It's really just an extremely miniscule percentage of drivers who actually use one. In fact, even most people who buy them quickly tire of the noise, then toss them in the glovebox and forget about them.

Anyone seen any statistics posted anywhere on the numbers of RDs estimated to be on the road? Is it just a Texas thing that so few RDs are on the road?

Turn your POP on, you'll find them real quick. When I was in Texas, I saw them freakin' eveywhere and almost all were Cobras.

I would say 60% of detectors in Texas are cobras. I work in the auto glass business and see it every day. It makes me just want to throw them all away.

try going out of town, most highway drivers i have seen 2/3 have cobras and 1/3 have bel units, but thats maybe 1 in twenty who have radars period

Yup, a few Cobras around. There are a few Lexuses with UNNAMED BRAND OF OVERPRICED RADAR. I only have one friend (Cobra user) who has a radar detector. There is no one else I know with one here in Plano.

Last time I've read it was about only 15% nationwide.

It is. Get you a VG2 or the spectre. By experience, it makes it easier to find one with VG2 and much more with spectre. Although I have not used the later.

Maybe most drivers there drive with the STi-R or the 9500CI.

I see a good portion of cars in the parking lot I work in with radar detectors. Mostly old Cobra's pointed at the sky. Only one time did I see a V1 in a brand new E46 M3. Mounted correctly and looked awesome.

I've witnessed the agony and the ecstasy this week. I've seen an older Integra with V1 low center on the windshield, 2 Cobras (1 on a GMarq and can't remember the other), and an old Radioshack SWS detector on a new Higlander.
