Default No detection of RADAR signs

Has anyone ever had a "radar" sign clock your speed but your detector not alert to it?

I've had this happen in just a few spots while traveling. Neither my V1 nor my 8500 x50 detected it. But the darn sign clocked my speed accurately. Is there some new band out?

Secondly...last week I was riding my bike through the Sawtooth of Idaho. I met a sheriff's deputy and my V1 did not alert. He U- turned and stopped me and informed me I was speeding...he said he clocked me at 72 in a 55 mph zone.

In the short he didn't write me up but I did see the display flashing 72. He was travelling so I don't think he was using Lazer....and no I did not see what equipment he was using through his window. It's very puzzling to me. I've been using RDs for 30 years now and tend to gravitate to the better units.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

My V1 did not detect a certain speed sign until I sent it back for the 1.8 upgrade, after that it has been fine. Maybe it needs a tune up, but that does not explain the 8500 not seeing it either.

At first glance I would think that the sign was simply out of tune, if both the Escort and V1 did not detect it.

See here also for an explanation:
    http://www.radardetector.net/forums/...peed-sign.html

But the fact that your Escort didn't pick up the LEO who clocked you (oncoming), is troubling. Putting all these facts together it would SEEM to mean:

    A) The V1 is out of tune. How old is it (it may also have the 'E' error)?
    B) The Escort is out of tune,
    C) AND the Escort is not flashing a Service/Req. message (unlikely, but it has happened before to a few members)... well one credible member that I can remember as of recent: Jerry and his STi (Belscort).

What are your settings on both units? Any power supply issues?

I must say this is odd, are they still picking up their usual 'false alerts'?

Give us the specs on both units and software versions, please

First off the Escort was not the unit that failed to alert the LEO encounter in Idaho. That was the V1. However both have no alert on the prescribed sign. But that may be ok if the sign was not a bona fide "radar sign".

What is most troubling is the fact my V1 didn't alert when the sheriff's deputy stopped me (72 in a 55).

According to V1 website I have their most current version:

V1.8—POP2 with Euro Mode. I see these references to 3.8xxx...wtf? Where do you determine that?

    I'll be calling Valentine tomorrow.

i would send it in and ask them to check the unit!!

I have seen a few speed signs in a local neighborhood that were non-traditional looking (usually they are portable trailers, these were permanently installed speed limit signs with LED displays below the sign).

The sign seemed to have some sort of instant on/selective targeting mechanism as my RD would only go off when you got right up on the sign and then it would instant on you for a second or two.

    May have been the case?

    (I'm using a 9500i)

Post Re: No detection of RADAR signs

Has anyone ever had a "radar" sign clock your speed but your detector not alert to it?

Yes, it's called CW radar. Your Detector is not designed to pick up CW radar signals. Therefore, it won't alert you. It's like your scanner. If you don't program in 155.4750mhz you won't hear the county pd operating at 155.4750mhz. If the detector isn't ment to pick up CW signals, which none of them are, it simply won't alert you.

The reason the detector makers don't alert to CW radar is because it is not a legit threat, and they know that. Leo's aren't authorized to use it to enforce speed limits anyhow. It is not IACP approved, nor NASHTA approved for home office use.

Besides the fact all being able to detect it would do is make your detector false to everything in sight.

In the end, may your detector be out of tune. It's possible. Would I freak out untill I go test it on a door sensor, or another source? NO. I'd go check it at another location first to double check and make sure it wasn't just CW radar.

If it picks up the door fine. Then you have your answer. If you're really peeved about it, stop and check the side of the radar antenna on the trailer and see what the spec's say on the side of it. It might even say it's a CW based radar ant. on the side, or it may not. Atleast then you'll know who makes it.

If it was a detector that was that out of tune, it would still pick up the sensor at close proximity. Your detector isn't going to fall that out of tune that fast. That has just yet to be seen. Although it can be out of tune so bad that your detection is just horrible. To the point it might as well not exist. Although on higher end units. They will go to an "E" error, or to SERVICE REQ, or they will SELF CAL themselves meaning recalibrated and retune themselves on the fly. Not to say if you have a cheap low end unit thats 10yrs old and left it in the sun, then -30 below weather that it couldn't fall out of tune so badly it might loose a band. ALthough the others would still work fine, or atleast OK. Most times i'd say 99 percent of the time. The unit will still pick up the band in question, it will just be drastically fading in sensitivity.

So, in conclusion? My guess would be CW based radar antenna. Which is fine with me. I'd rather not be annoyed by a trailer sign on a 400 mile trip when i don't know it's there, so I don't slow down for a non legit threat. Although thats just me, some dig the trailer sign's I personally see them as annoying, and drone type behavior by the local police to slow traffic speeds. I do enjoy one once in a great while to do a good test like any other. Although, not very often.

Acutally I left out the first two letters of the type of radar being used. It's called FM-CW based radar. 2.45-GHz Region to answer your question.
