I used to always hear of officers having accidental discharges around the station while showing their weapons to each other. In fact, my partner did that in our squad car one night around 1986, lol. That's because almost no department ( there are some, but very rare, buy your own kinda department) let's officers carry 1911s. I feel that if you have an AD as a police officer, that should pretty much = termination. That item is to important to not know how to use or implement safely. I sell guns to cops, and then they tell me that they don't like they're Glock or M&P smith and wesson or what have you because of the lack of internal safetys and such, and that they know officers who have had A.Ds. and they don't want to have an A.D. They don't like it when I start talking about how officers who can't handle a weapon like that have no buisness in law enforcement and such. It's funny when they snap back though with the "Oh, well I can handle it, I'm just saying" comment. No officer wants to look like he can't handle his own damn gun. HA!

The gas station by my house is LEO hangout Sun-Thurs nights, from like 12 to 3am. I was there with my girlfriend, and a K9 unit showed up, and we got to talking. Coolest guy Ive met in a long long time. He brought his dog out, let us pet him and just shot the breeze with us for at least an hour or so.

I got around to asking him about his radar and laser. He said he knew it was Ka band, but couldnt remember the make. I asked him if he used laser and what it was, he said "I dunno, I just point, shoot and pull people over"

The ones that I know would much rather carry a 1911 than the weapon they carry now.
Some of them do need to carry a double action with a 20 pound pull though.
I have carried a custom 1911 daily for over 20 years, but that is my choice.

You're absolutely right. And, as a side note, that is one of the more significant contributory factors to accidental shootings of police officers. One of the biggest benefits of departments issuing standard weapons (as opposed to officers getting to choose their own), is that there is much less showing off of weapons, and many fewer accidental shootings.

That's the dumbest thing I have ever read. Show me the stats that support this. If I'm showing you my gun you better be showing me your hands and doing exactly what I'm ordering you to do. You'd be going to jail.

Correct, lol. Accidental discharges, mostly around the locker room, at the station, or in the PD parking lot. Although, my partner managed to squeeze one off while showing off his new Sig in the patrol car once. Made for a humorous "Dear Sheriff" letter when the windshield had to be replaced. Luckily, we were out in the middle of nowhere when it happened.

I too remember articles in periodicals in the late 80's/early 90's regarding sidearm selection for departments. Many of the topics involved training, liability, double-action-only (DAO), trigger pull weights, etc. If I recall, people such as Masaad Ayoob and Jan Libourel were among those writing on the topic. There were some legitimate concerns, though I really disliked the DAO revolvers and true-DAO hammer-fired self-loaders.
