Mine isn't hardwired and I have mine up near my rear-view mirror; I just ran a 12' RJ-11 cord down around and squeezed into the crevices to the lighter plug. I'll update this post with a picture in a few minutes.

The red is where the wire is hidden.

EXCELLENT post Zapple. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

(I use the same install idea (long RJ-11 cord--> cig. light) for temp V1 use. I have never used the coiled cord except for the first 2 days I had it.)

If you have a mirror that has power running to it (compass, map lights, etc.) then use an invisicord. I have one in the Vette and Caddy, makes for a very neat install. I had one of the mirror mounts in the Vette but it was in my line of vision during hard cornering, so I moved it up high behind the tint strip and you cannot even tell it is there from the outside.

Like the others here have said, either go for an interior rearview mirror "stalk" mount, or, alternatively, go for a visor or even headliner-mount scheme.

Also, typically, "hardwiring" will make the power cord (whichever scheme you wind up using, either with just a power tap or with use of a remote SmartCord or similar remote-actuated mute/function button) much more "invisible" than will having it dangling down to you lighter socket or being draped across the dash.

Thanks zapple. I think I will try that. Where can you get the cord that you were talking about.

Well for my V1 it is a standard RJ-11 cord (phone cord) and I'm assuming that's what it is for other radar detectors as well. You can pick it up anywhere really that sells phone cords or electronics but they will probably be way overpriced from places like Radio Shack or Best Buy. I was a fool and bought one from RS and then realized I had all sorts of them after wiring mine up .

And also, if you do use that technique I recommend taking down your RD and unplugging it from the lighter plug also so people can't tell that you have electronics in your car.
