Default Threat vs Expert Meter Displays

People always say that Escorts Expert Meter display is better. I was reading the manual for the StiR and it's Threat display seemed just as good, because it shows multple bands and then next to it a number to indicate strength.

Escorts shows the band and then little lines that indicate strength.

My q, is what makes the Escorts better?

At a quick glance, a bar line is easier to read than a number. Whether or not you agree with that is personal taste.

Escorts EXP can show more threats then the Bels ... though on the newer remote units the Beltronics might have that ability as well (not sure, not a huge Bel fan, but I wouldn't think so if they are like past models Threat display).

Your not talking about Spec display on the Escort BTW... your thinking EXP display.

Spec display is the numbers, and they are virtually the same in that respect.

So EXP vs Threat: The Escort is superior because is can track 2Ka 2K 4X all at the same time... that is the real reason why most have in the past felt the Escorts style was superior.

I always liked the idea of the escort display with individual band strengths being show and their band ID but with freq. display, even though it isn't the exact freq, it is close enough IMO and because the sources don't seem to waver that much in freq from my experience, I can tell individual threats from non-threats. Even individual police radar units. It really helps in sorting out polluting radar detectors from police radar also.

I believe with other radar displays you just get an indication of the band and no indication that the transmitter is probably a false alarm. Except maybe with V-1 and it's "j-out" feature but many many owners says it often J's out real police radar!

I don't think J-out of police radar is as big of a problem as people make it out to be. And I bet it's a problem that every sophisticated filtering detector has, but most of them pull back alerts WITHOUT telling you. Did that alert go away because the detector retracted it or because it was IO? ;-)

It would be real nice if the J /alert was displayed "in it's frequency" though.

I am still amazed Valentine Electronics doesn't have Frequency displays in their detectors. One can apparently look at every source of door opener or signal on the "little a" setting but not their actual frequency.

Well to be hoenst, I actually don't want the V1's UI to change in its current form -- that is one of its strongest selling points IMO. It might be simple, it might be 1970's technology, but no other detector that I've used has had such an instantly-readable display at a glance.

But I would be interested in having the V1 be able to export more detailed info about what it's doing via RS-232 or something, such as the frequency+strength info for each bogey found, and so on. The V1 does literally see every door opener individually in a shopping mall -- it's amazing at multiple-bogey tracking. It would be a wealth of info particularly for making an add-on GPS filtering module.

If I ever add a carputer one of its primary tasks will be to take in the V1's alerts along with a GPS module and other information to postprocess or statistically analyze the results

Bel/Escort have patents for frequency display. Whistlers recently introduced 695 model has a workaround where its RSID feature tells what known police frequency is closest to the signal picked up.

WOW, thanks for the relevant information. I didn't know that.

Let correct myself, I did mean Expert Meter vs Threat Display.
