radar detectors don't work!

Or, so I was told...

I was hanging out at the firehouse this afternoon, watching a fellow firefighter wash his pickup. I noticed a RD sitting on his dash and asked him what brand it was. He walked over and started looking through the window and somebody said "What, you don't know what it is?" He answered "Cobra, I think... They don't work anyhow" His brother is a city cop and told him they did tests in the academy and they got speed readings before the detectors activated.

I was gonna argue with him and tell him that I can pick up Ka band over a mile away, but wasn't bored enough. hehe There are two city cops that are also volunteers at my firehouse, I may ask them to set up a speed trap for me to crash one day.

Oh, we had just come back from a gasoline spill (the gas tank fell out of a car, pretty funny) and I noticed a RD sitting on his dash, too. I got close and noticed "Cobra" on it. A total stealth install, too!

No offence, but I think I'm a lot more interested in what kind of car that was than what kind of RD he had!

I honestly didn't notice. I goto so many accident scenes I only remember the car if I had to do the paperwork. Maybe somebody will recognize it from the photo.

I have been saying that for years... I figure the sooner the state and federal governments get that message that RD's don't work the sooner they will leave my RD alone. So the next time someone says that RD's don't work agree with them, maybe tell them a story about how you got a ticket while using an RD once... It doesn't have to be true, but make it really nasty, vicious, horrific... If you can throw in something about being tasered that might help too.

I am of the belief that the more LEOs think that RDs don't work the better. Maybe it's a good thing that Cobras sell as many as they do, it works in favor of the owner of the really good detectors.

No offence, but I think I'm a lot more interested in what kind of car that was than what kind of RD he had!

In all seriousness the cops are right. They don't work if radar is used properly. They can only beat radar if it's operated sloppily. That's all you need to beat most of the time. Unless you live in Ohio or upper NY state.

I have no doubt RDs are beaten in police training sessions. No doubt at all.

With my 9500ix if I didn't slow down on all the steep curves i probably wouldn't have my license, some cops love i/o when their trying to catch speeders and the warning is never there sometimes they will even visual estimate and wont even shoot your rabbit and after that they got you speeding really close to them and their finger on the trigger and they even get video of you slowing down, in situations like these a radar detector is worthless since the range on most of them is very low to nothing.

Wow, so true. You reminded me of the time I ordered my first RD. When it arrived in the mail I was not home so there was a note in the letterbox to head down to the post office and collect it.

While I was waiting for the friendly(but strangely twisted/perverted looking) postal officer to find my parcel out the back, two coppers came in and started shoving me around...the big guy, a sergeant I think had a taser and kept zapping me with it, while his mate kept saying "are you sure you want that parcel, are you sure you want that parcel?"

Eventually I said "no thanks" and returned home without my precious brand new RD...only to find, it was at home waiting for me. It seems with all the powers of "big brother" behind them they still only managed to intercept the wrong package. One of these days I'll get around to re-ordering that water-filter but to be quite honest I am a little scared.

But it is an issue of technique.
