WOW its been a while. RD update?

Man. It's been about 2 years since I was last actively on here. Feels good to be back. When I was active here in '07 you guys helped me pick out my first RD, the Whistler XTR-690. I was in HS and broke lol, but yall helped me find somethin good and in my budget.

Its a different ball game now though. I'm back, and I'm in a different city. I'm in Austin, TX now and there are quite a few more cops than I'm used to. I've also actually got a job haha.

Anyways, can yall give me the cliff notes of the past couple years? lol. What RDs have come to shine; whats gone away; WHAT IS THE BEST right now and what are the great deals for the money?

Hopefully I can stay more active in here. You guys are a great bunch.

Actually the XTR 690 was just replaced a few weeks ago by the 690SE. The performance so far in testing has been questionable. The 9500ix has pretty well stolen the show from the 9500i (although the it is still sold). Cobra is still crap. Escort is about the same. Beltronics has come out with the GX65 which is similar to the 9500i but not as popular. That's all I can think about.

Keep the Whistler and buy a jammer. That is going to be your biggest priority in Austin. It's all about teh laz0r there now. Check out the FAQ in the Laser Jammer section for help choosing.

I agree. The Whistler is sufficient protection against radar but not laser.

Not necessarily. The advantages to mounting high greatly outweigh the advantages of mounting low IMO. Besides, 99% of the time a detector will not alert in time to save you from laser.

Make sure your unit is REV C and not REV A/REV B. If not Mike B continues to provide superb customer service to all Whistler owners. I'm upgrading to a 78 SE from a Pro 78 Rev C which as been a superb detector for me.

Yeah I seriously need to get that upgrade. I've been meaning to do it and I don't know why I haven't.

That Pro 78 is nice. Same internals but you gotta love that display. A rec'd it to a few friends and they're more than pleased.
