    Default nh dot ezpass notification

    Hi all,

I received a letter via snail mail stating that on a certain date range (weekend) I went through a toll in speed over 35mph.

The letter did not state where, time, details, nothing only a range of dates, which if their date's are correct, I was not on the road at all during their specified dates, long weekend of hanging out at the house for a change.

The number of infractions it continued to list was "000001".

    My question(s) would be:

How can they track your speed with the ezpass?

Is it just the NH troopers, leo's able to issue tickets regarding this?

Since I was not driving, and nobody else was that had my car/transponder etc, how can they say that I was speeding, and further more where is their proof since it is extremely vague in their letter?

Has anyone else come across this, and could you share your experience?

    Thanks!

Usually they have a set of inductive loops in the ground which help time the photograph (in Texas anyways) to get the plate number. Sometimes they use laser which can also provide distance which in turn can calculate speed. Finally some use a combination of inductive loop and radar/lidar. In Central Texas when they first installed the 130 set I did a test of decelerating through an exit at 60-70 (road I was going onto was also at 55). The initial inductive loop noticed the speed variance and kicked in the KA to assist tracking. Once I passed the exit KA went immediately off. No LEO's around as there was no traffic at this time and I could see for miles.

Oh and thanks to Kirk Watson and that other jerk off rep from Dallas, RLC, highway photo enforcement, and ticketing from toll booths will soon be permitted by law in Texas. I believe the special session coming up this week will finalize this. Rick "Hairdo" Perry is pushing for it because it also expands where they can do toll roads and expands powers for eminent domain to allow for more tolls. Kirk, dude from Dallas, and Perry are getting massive amounts of money from the special interest groups for tolls.

They're not that advanced up here. No radar or laser so I'm not quite sure what to think, other than call them and see if that gets me any answers, other than a typical, sorry sir but it must have been you.

Lately (almost daily) the NH staties sit at the toll's shooting laser....

Another option may be another set of RFID readers - found this out of Baltimore which might be what is going on up North...

I still believe they are using inductive loop though because there are too many variances that could occur if they are using point to point RFID/EZPass. One easy way to tell is the next time you go through a EZPass lane look on the ground for lines (usually covered by tar or a grey substance if concrete) that form a rectangle or something similar - thats inductive loop. RFID are bigger grey/white boxes mounted above or on poles, if you see two sets in close proximity (not different lanes but over the same lane at two points) then they are using RFID.

I read online a good while back that it is relatively easy for others to steal your ezpass RF ID and then use it for their own vehicles.

Both are great points! My wife reminded me that one of the dates/weekends we were home the entire time (her birthday) and I always forget.... so.. unless they show photo proof, someone has my RFID then.

Will have to call to find out. Again both are great bits of information, I'll keep a lookout for indications where I live and travel, Concord, NH and Bedford, NH tolls.

The only other noticable thing I have seen are what look like orange trailers that have telescoping poles raised high in the air with a black security camera type device on the very top of it. I see these along the highway's where I travel along 95 and 93 in NH.

The NH toll booths do have laser sensors (they set off my detectors pretty consistently) but they shoot from above so they're probably for sensing trailers moreso than vehicle speed. Speed sensing is probably done with inductive loops.

AFAIK EZPass can issue account violations for speeding but you can't get a ticket from the EZPass report, yet. Too many violations and they cancel your account. Cops can set up speed traps at the tolls to issue tickets, though.

As for the OP's violation, give them a call and see if you can get a copy of the photo/video footage. Also check the activity history on their website to see if it shows any trips through the tolls on days you know you didn't drive through them.

I believe the orange things with the cameras on them are for monitoring the construction zones. Not sure what kind of monitoring though, maybe to identify traffic issues/jams.
If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

Could it be as simple as you entered at this entrance at this time and traveled to this exit at this time. You made the trip in 20 minutes but if you were going the speed limit it should have taken you 35 minutes. Thus you were speeding.

About you not being on the road at that time, they, police/toll road authority, may be the transponder at fault was miss-read. not too likely, and there was an error.

I have a friend who received a citation for not paying the toll at a bridge even though the toll gate stated he paid via EZPASS and the toll gate barrier raised to let him through. If he didn't pay the barrier wouldn't have raised. He fought, by a simple letter and hasn't heard anything since.
