Default Would you accept large size for ultimate performance?

We all know that size is the biggest constraint on increasing a device's radar reception. A larger radar horn can pull in weaker signals, and a horn can only be optimized for one particular band, so multiple horns could theoretically allow a detector to be optimized for more than one band.

So would you accept the tradeoff if you had the option? Would you buy a detector with a larger radar horn, or more than one radar horn?

Of course it wouldn't lead to a massive increase in functionality because falsing is a major limiting factor here, but want to know how many of you guys think it's worth it to deal with a box that's a little bigger if it's a little better.

Maybe just one big horn for Ka. I dont see the point for K and especially not for X.

Wow... I didn't expect to be the lone dissenter here.

My detector receives plenty far enough. It is just extremely rare that I can even conceive of needing significantly more range. It's certainly not worth it to me to stick something the size of a Fuzzbuster I on my dash to see more range.

How about a laser eye the size of a headlight?

On the turnpike I see almost exclusively I/O Ka... I would love to receive it from over a mile away (which seems to rarely happen).

I could see doing it for a remote-mounted unit. Give it a nice, huge horn so it can pick up very weak signals. But instead of alerting on every signal, make it smart. If it's sensitive enough, it should be able to distinguish IO from CO at a long distance, based on if the signal ramps up gradually or cuts abruptly in and out. If it can accurately sniff out IO, it could give alerts to upcoming IO traps, while ignoring very weak CO until it gets a bit closer, minimizing falses from door openers, etc.

Greater sensitivity may also allow it to analyze the signals more thoroughly, allowing for better anti-falsing from crap RDs etc. With enough sensitivity, it should be easier to distinguish real POP from Crapra LO sweeps, for example.

Maybe as DSPs get faster, a powerful RD could even analyze the waveform and figure out if it's coming from a crap RD or a door opener (which are probably noiser and less stable than a police radar).

But even better would be multiple laser sensors that could be placed in strategic locations, including spots that increase the chances of picking up scatter (e.g., corners of the windshield) as well as the kill shots (tell you when to pull over) But LCC filtering is a must.

If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

On the radar signal processing opportunity provided by more raw sensitivity. The real deal, I/O detection from longer distances, over hills, around curves.
