Older RMR

Okay so for obvious reasons there is not a thread for RMR, so I'm posting here. Anyways I just spoke with a gentleman who says for the RMR that he bought about four years ago works great, as for the one he bought with in the last two years it is a POS, anyone care to comment on this? Does any one have any opinion about the older RMR detectors? As oppossed to the newer ones?

They all suck. My dad's is at least 5 years old. I'd say between 5-10 years old. It jams the band gun if the antennas are pointing at each other and they are within 5 feet. No the detection is hysterically awful. I'm well away the following is a no-no. On a cross state road trip I put it against the V1. It was total ownage by Mr. Valentine. It missed almost every shot of radar. On one encounter it did detect Ka at point blank, whereas the V1 picked it up 4 shots a head of time.

Its pretty much a short range line of sight detector. If an old man in his 90's can see the source with outglasses, so can RMR.

First off, most RMRs claim to jam radar and laser, which is a complete scam. So, if your customer claims that his RMR has been preventing LEOs from getting speed readings on his vehicle, then he is completely wrong.

Now, the detection capabilities of RMRs are pathetic when compared to what most use around here, but when compared to $40 detectors that can be bought at Wal-Mart, they stack up reasonably well. Your customer has probably never used anything decent, so he has no reference point.

back in my younger days, probably right out of high school. i brought one of this RMR radar laser detector/jammer. spent like $400 on it. that thing was a POS. it didnt even beep once at all, every LEO i encounter, it was dead silent. every time i hit a gas station/store. it beeps. after like 3 weeks of use, the button on the top broke and i got rid of that thing, make me stop using RD for years until not too long ago. well, that was when i didnt know any better. but yeah, never will i be so stupid and fall for that again...

I bought a Phazer scrambler around 1992-93 I believe. Spent over $300.00. While driving with it, I wondered how anyone would know if it was really blocking radar..

After about a week of being very skeptical I sent it back for a refund. I ended up buying a Escort passport 4500.

I had a older RMR radar given to me as a gift from my wife several years ago. She heard all the wonderful claims about them. If you like poor audio , cheap displays, very limited radar response, no custom options and absolutely no scrambling or jamming effectiveness this is your RD. Drove threw several speed signs in my local area with zero effectiveness for detection or speed. Glad i had one because now I know. Those RMR ads sure are tantalizing aren't they.

I had a co worker ask me about RMR the other day because he knew that I had a site dedicated to radar detectors. I told him not to touch them. He asked what I'd recommend for under $200 and I told him the Whistler SE series or an 8500 were his best bets.

The variance may be that, IIRC, some RMR models were manufactured by BG Tech (Cobra, Radio Shack, Early warning) while others were made by Attowave (the company the made the PNI brand RDs). The Attowave ones were somewhat stronger performers.
