Radar Detector Newbie/Need Help Choosing One :)

Hello, I finally turned 18, passed my roadtest, and will be buying my first car shortly. Because of how much insurance is, I'm going to have to buy a Ford Focus as my first car and will not be able to get my fox body mustang, camaro, or firebird etc etc until later on. However, that doesn't mean I will not have the hammer down. I'm in NYC, I do commute out to Long island for family but mainly will be in the area of NYPDs Highway Unit. I don't know what band they use. I want the best detector for under 200 that will do well in the city, long island, and maybe NJ on the turnpike. Later on when I get into more money I will stash up a V1. Thanks for any help!

Good choice on looking at getting a V1, but honestly you probably won't find to great of a detector for under $200, if money is a problem shoot me a PM and I might be able to hook you up with a good deal.

I agree with <<JAZZY>>. The best sub-$200 radar detector is the original Escort 8500. No detector will save you from laser though.

So what was the point of keeping it under $200 in the first place... if you're just going to say "Ehhh... I will go with a V1 now instead... what's better than THAT!?!".


Basically the only thing to go from a V1 is 2-Escort M3's:

The Redline and the 9500ci.
They are likely both just a tad more sensitive than the V1, are spectre invisible, and the 9500ci adds laser jammers (albeit cr@ppy ones) and GPS-functions to the game.


The V1 on the other hand is nearly as sensitive (most think a hair-less at this point), except it is much-more REACTIVE... (Do a search for Q/T or Quick Trigger)... costs $100 less than the Redline ($400 for the V1 vs. $500 for Redline)... AND it is 1/4 of the cost of a 9500ci. ($400 vs $1,600). AND the V1 has: ARROWS!


Your choice.

The Sti and V1 are likely the exact same sensitivity-wise AND the Sti is less reactive (to Q/T) AND costs more, but is spectre immune.

The Sti-R is discontinued so I cannot tell someone to buy this unit... to sketchy to buy it unauthorized at this point.

I'd also say save up for the V1. Drive responsibly, I'm not saying you're a bad driver, but others are.

Of course, I'm not going to become a speed demon, but I do want to have the detector because theres alot of cops on the roads of NY.

Well, I did some researching over the last few hours and did come to the same conclusion that you did. I think the best bang for the buck is the V1. BTW, I changed my mind because I figured I should just go all out, pay the money one time and get it over with. Thanks for the info really apreciate your time and help.
