These have been around forever in Europe. Here's what the professor had to say about horn extensions:

It's been done before (and discussed on here before). In this case, it was done to provide useful warning to weak overseas photo radar. But you don't get something for nothing. Off axis detection suffers, because when you increase the aperture size of the antenna for more gain, it also becomes more directional. This is a difficult concept for some people to grasp, since they might see the antenna as being "wider" and think it is actually more likely to catch off-axis signals. But depending on what you are looking for, the tradeoff can be a good solution (like in this case).

Nope, it won't. M3 platform antennaS need a different solution.

Regarding the increased directivity - it's good to find a compromise - 6-12 dB gain gives very good results. Extension of 24dB gain is already too much. Because of their directionality it is difficult indeed appropriate level of such monsters. Each 1-2 degrees of angular difference can be very clearly felt in effectiveness, and perfect leveling not allways means the best performance. You have a lot of experimenting to catch the best solution.

The flap is at 45 degrees so you can mount wholeness vertically in such a way that the antenna is looking up or down while flap reflects a radar wave directly to the antenna.

In my opinion, this particular flap is too small and further narrows the field of view of the antenna.
