Lightbulb Custom Radar Detector Installation in Super Exotic Sports Cars - Need Advice

    Hey Guys,

My friend's Dad was really impressed with the V1 in my Range Rover when we were at the beach this weekend and I told him how great they would be in his cars as in had a heavy foot and some really nice (and super fast) cars.

I told him what he really needs is a V1 and a laser jammer setup, but across 3 vehicles that gets really expensive, really fast. Although I suppose you could move the V1's back and fourth... kind of a pain.

Anyway here is the car list:

    Mercedes S65 Sedan
    Aston Martin DBS Coupe
    Ferrari 599-GTB Coupe

I'm perfectly comfortable pulling the S65 apart to run wires, tap power with an add-a-circuit at the fuse box, etc... In this car I would put the V1 above the mirror and the remote display on the steering column most likely.

As for the Aston Martin and the Ferrari, I am not interested in popping any panel off - ever I suppose this means the best I can do is put the V1 above the rear view mirror and run the wires down the A-Pillar and and to a remote display somewhere - essentially just like the S65 now that I think about it.

Does anyone make a custom V1 remote display that is smaller? I know you can take them apart and make them significantly slimmer, it would be nice if I could get a slimmed down one with the phone cord soldered into it so I don't need to have such a think display and it would also make running the wire much easier. Does someone make this?

I'm kind of thinking as I type and I think that is the best way to go, there has to be access to the fuse box in all of those cars so that makes tapping the power and running the wiring quick and easy. I'm game to mount the units above the mirror but I need a better remote display option - ideas? input? advice? anything?

Lastly - what about a laser jammer? I'm pretty sure these all need to be hardwired. I don't mind running wires around the engine bay but then getting the wires inside the car for the brain and display would kill it - I don't suppose there is a system with wireless heads... I'll post this in the laser sub-section as well.

    CLIFF NOTE VERSION:
    • Tap Power at Fuse Box
    • Mount V1 above rear view mirror
    • Run all wiring from hardwire kit to V1
    • Find a slimmed down remote display and install it around the cluster
    • Laser jammer - wireless somehow??

Any and all input and advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,

    Mike

Yeah, with those kind of cars, I don't think him dropping a few thousand to have them outfitted would be much of a dent to his pocketbook.

Run the totals by him and see if he agrees to them. Also, ask your local custom design shop for ideas on where/how to run a hardwire kit for both detector and laser jammer on the Aston Martin, and Ferrari if you don't want to mess anything up.

The advice might not be free however so again run any spending by the buyer first.

No kidding. These things should be equipped with fully concealed systems like the 9500ci, IMO.

Why? There are already wires running from the engine bay into the cabin. Just use the same access points. It's likely that there are unused points as well.

On the exotics, like the Ferrari and Aston, I do not recommend that you install any sort of system that needs remote mounted modules (either radar or laser). Have a professional do it. Just lifting these cars has to be done a certain way or you can damage the chassis.

Many dealers of these automobiles either install countermeasures themselves or know a professional outfit that can.

Plus, a shop or dealer should have insurance for if they screw something up. Do you?

For the V1's use an Invisicord instead of running wires back to the fuse box. A whole lot easier and cleaner.

I would not worry about doing the installs on any of these vehicles if I had the service manuals to tell me how things came apart. Without that info I would let a professional do the interior stuff and route the wires to the heads. I would still want to make the call on head location and placement.
