If I'm passing you on the right, YOU are in the wrong lane!
If speed kills, how come I'm still alive?

We're talking about the original Escort 8500, not the X50. It's no longer manufactured, but you can find them refurbished. It's cheap and performs reasonably well.
There are no such thing as a "cop detector". What you are looking for is a RD(radar detector), that does what it says it does, detects radar. If the LEO(law enforcement officer) is not actively running radar, then there is nothing to detect and your RD will remain silent. This is true at least 80% of the time. There are also many false alerts out there, like automatic door openers that use radar to detect someone moving towards the door and the "your speed is" signs that tell you how fast you're going, for some unknown reason. There are lots of false alerts out there and you'll learn what causes them.
Also, some LEOs will leave their radar off until they see a car they feel makes a nice target, then flips it on when that car is in range. This is call I/O(instant-on). This is why sensitivity matters in a RD. The better the RD, the more range it has and the more likely you are to detect the LEO tagging someone else up ahead of you.
Some LEOs use laser instead of radar. Laser is almost never detectable until your car is specifically targeted. Then, it aquires your speed in a fraction of a second.....and you're smoked. All RDs detect laser, but when it alerts, it's too late. The only way to beat laser is to have a laser jammer installed on your car.
There are no laws specifically outlawing laser jammers in New York, but that doesn't mean that LEOs won't mess with someone that intentionally messes with their ability to use their speed enforcement equipment. There have been a couple of examples where LEOs have messed with laser jammer users that tried to flaunt their abilities to LEOs, which is why we have a procedure that keeps us out of trouble. What we do once the laser jammer alerts is slow down to acceptable speeds, then shut the jammers off and allow the LEO to aquire our new and improved speed. If this is properly executed, you will have no problems.
The Laser Interceptor is the best, hands down.
LI Quad for front and back protection - Laser Interceptor Generation 8 Laser Interceptor - QUAD - Laser Jammers at Radar Busters
LI Dual for front only protection - Laser Interceptor Generation 8 Laser Interceptor - DUAL - Laser Jammers at Radar Busters
The Blinder is not as good, but most find their performance acceptable.
Blinder M47 for front and back protection - Blinder M47 X-Treme Laser Jammer - Laser Jammers at Radar Busters
Blinder M27 for front only protection - Blinder M27 X-Treme Laser Jammer - Laser Jammers at Radar Busters
Everything else out there is crap, either for poor performance, lack of reliability, or total lack of customer service, or usually, some combination of the three.
I'm not sure I'd recommend countermeasures of any sort if you have trouble paying attention. Cruise control would probably be a better bet in your case. RD's and laser jammers do not replace situational awareness. If you can't pay attention to your speed, I'm not sure you'll have the awareness required to determine what's going on quickly enough to respond appropriately.
In other words, simply buying a RD and/or laser jammer doesn't mean that you can drive around as if you have some cloak of invisibility. You have to pay attention to what's going on.
amazing. i understand everything ALOT better. thank you so much for your help. i know a lot of people have similar questions as first time posters. just a thought, you could mayb sticky this. this is great! thanks again.
so escort 8500 or beltronic rx 65?
OK, so you buy a $30,000+ car and you want a RD less than $200. That makes no sense.Your car can go fast and it needs appropriate protection. It will get noticed. Get a V1 or a Redline/ or 9500. The money is worth it. You will need it as the cost of a ticket and increased insurance will be more than the cost of the detector. But first, pay attention and do some reading so that you can learn what a RD can and cannot do.
There is no difference between the Escort 8500 red and blue models. One just has blue led display and the other red. Some people like the blue because they think its easier on the eyes or maybe people wont try to use them as rabbits. A rabbit is someone who is speeding and being followed by other speeders that are using the 'rabbit' as a shield in case there is a speed trap ahead.
As I remember the old style Beltronics RX65 and Escort 8500 are basically sister models using S7 platform. The current production Escort 8500 X50 and Beltronics RX65 models are again sister models using the M4 platform instead of the S7 and cost more money.
My opinion is that you should save and buy one of the top of the line radar models. The Valentine 1, Beltronics Redline and Escort 9500IX all have their own sets of good qualities and should be selected based on personal preferences and particular needs. If you cant afford that or aren't willing to spend the money just get the old style refurb 8500.

There. Now everyone can stop doing all the work for you. As much as im sure they dont mind helping, this information is easily found with a search.
If youre driving a new Audi and expect an 8500 to save you, please dont post here when you get a ticket and dont understand why it didnt give you enough warning. Listen to the other posters like StealthStalker, and buy something more capable. Most people here know what they're talking about, and you do get what you pay for.
If only they were having a giveaway. I might be able to afford that, right?
I think many here would pay a pretty penny for a legitimate 'cop detector',
A fantastic post, quite informative. The disclaimer at the end is also quite entertaining.
