Radar Detector in Chicago

Heya, I've been lurking here for a while.
I'm looking for a good radar detector in Chicago, Cook County. I looked at the locational thread, and the thread mentioned these:

Chicago (St. Louis Metro Area): Ka (Decatur Genesis 35.5), Laser (PL III), Redlight Enforcement (inductive loop), X (traffic density monitoring)

Its still accurate, right?

I'm thinking about either getting a refurb Escort, Bel STi, or Whistler. I'm not sure how good the refurbished units are, if I want to save money, it doesn't seem like a good idea to have a broken(?) Escort that was later fixed and maybe will break down again.

So it would be really nice if I could find out about the longevity of the detectors as well as their performance.

The RLCs are a big problem here. Is there a reason why a Cheetah/Escort is better than a GPS with them labeled as POIs?

Welcome to the forum.I think you answered your own question....refurbished are a risk..
but you can get lucky!!

I would put our Defender and Cheetah's Trinity camera databases up against anyone else's for accuracy. Defender is updated weekly and also has popular speed traps added to it.

The Passport 9500ix is my recommendation for you mainly due it's ability to automatically identify and eliminate radar false alerts. After it learns an area, when it alerts, there's a threat nearby. This is a huge feature and the reason this detector is the favorite of many, including myself (and I just noticed RadarBusters' best selling detector!)

As for our factory refurbished detectors, they were not necessarily broken to begin with. We receive the majority of them as trade-ins from purchases of our new detectors. We replace all of the plastic with new then test them to meet the same detection specifications as new. They are guaranteed so if you aren't happy with it return it for a refund.

Is it based on location and pre-programmed for the area, or does it customize it for your surroundings?

With AutoLearn the 9500ix uses GPS location data and it's internal database to constantly record every radar signal that it receives. When it notices you receive the same radar frequency at the same location several times (usually 3 times) then it will notify you that it has "stored" this location and radar frequency as a false alert. The next time you drive by this location it will still detect the radar signal, but it will not alert to it. If it sees another radar frequency at that location while it is blocking the false alert then it will alert to it. It is all done automatically, you drive, it learns.

Our return policy on refurbished detectors is a full refund within 14 days after receiving it. If it is defective then we will obviously replace it with another if you like. They also have a 6 month repair warranty directly through us.

I'm definitely thinking of getting an Escort refurb, reading reviews, I see it must be recalibrate every once in a while. How much is this service and how often do I need to do it?

Blinder and LI are good jammers, but make sure they are mounted properly.

For radar I would recommend the 9500ix in a town the size of Chicago. Anything else might drive you crazy with falses. As for the GPS with Red Light POIs. A coworker tried it on his GPS and we compared it to my 9500ix. Not even close....the 9500ix was better all around.
