    Default The eyes have it

I was driving down a Maryland road today listening to very loud music. Bel 940 low mount on the windshield. Driving a little over the speed limit, wasn't using a rabbit but I was not the first car. Look over to a cubby spot of a high school where officers normally park to catch speeders and what do you know, LEO parked in the cubby hole facing same direction with all lights off. It was dark so I almost missed him entirely. Look down at the 940 and see it lit up. Appears the 940 had been warning me of K band with almost all bands lit up but I could not hear the detector over the music. No faulty speaker on the detector, just powerful SUV speaker music drowning out the detector's warning sound . Had I not been attentive enough to have been looking for a LEO and not 100% trusting the detector only, I could have been owned and it would have been totally my fault and not that of the detector. Goes without saying, whatever detector or countermeasures an individual has on their car, and no matter how expensive the equipment, the individual still has to pay attention to the warning signals given by the equipment and take proactive action.

As has been mentioned many times on this forum, there's no substitute for remaining attentive and using your eyes. Sometimes the eyes may be the only thing that saves you from a ticket. At least for me, today, the eyes have it!

I have the same issue; loud music, tire/wind noise, blower motor noise, etc.
The bright LED periscopes on my Whistlers, saved my a$$ a couple times.

Wish I had periscopes, but I don't have the music that loud all the time so I normally catch the warning. Guess I lucked up today. Glad to know your whistler is serving you well. Have you considered the 3600 yet? Looks like it's going to be a great unit as far as versatility goes.

The problem with the periscopes is they are a dead giveaway at night, especially if the LEO is behind you. I just run with mine turned off, especially at night. But I also tend to run my music a lot lower at night also - the cops here are so bored they will pull you over if they think you're blasting it too loud.

Not an issue for me. My detector is dash mounted almost right in front of the driver's seat a little towards the center, well out of sight of any LEO in my RVM. Once i get either a solid ID or know for sure its a LEO, the RDer gets a fast power off.

That works. My rear window is fairly tinted and running in dim/dark mode pretty much makes it impossible to see at night plus I've also got it on the dash where it's a good bit more discrete than having it mounted high, which I can't really mount it around the rear view mirror because I actually have a lot of heavy tint around it, and I think it would probably effect the detection range too much. The periscope lights being off is no big deal to me anyway, I actually find them to be too annoyingly bright at night - during the day is a different story, usually have them on so it's more noticeable to me during an alert, especially since I also blast my music a lot during the day.

An added benefit would be if the periscopes dimmed also when the display is in dim mode.

What would be really cool is if they were to include a multiple threat display of some kind somewhere in the SE models down the road and/or totally configurable band priority, like say for instance set it up to where you could assign every band its own pecking order for alerts, for instance 1) laser, 2) Ka 3). K, 4) X. A multiple threat display would obviously eliminate the need for that feature altogether though.

That and maybe the ability to dial-in K band a little better, but maybe the Pro-3600 addressed this.

I find that because the Escort 8500 X50 has a very high pitch sound on ka I don't miss it even if I have my music up loud and I have two subs. And 4 3 way six by 9's it maybe a good idear to get an escort radar detector. with loud tones i find that the Beltronics detectors just don't seem loud enough.
