mounting on the rear windshield? good or bad?

i need some advice, i just ordered my first ever radar detector (sti) and can't decide where to mount it. They are illegal where i live and am scared of getting caught with it. i'm thinking of mounting it on the rear windshield and tinting around it for stealth. the idea of that thing on my front windshield during the daytime makes me a little nervous, at night time theres no problem. if i mount it in the rear, can i turn it around so that it is backwards so i get better detection in the front? will that work? i know i won't be able to see it, but either will the LEO's, and that is more important. my back windshield is completely vertical, do you think it might work? any other suggestions? thanks.

Well what detector did you order? the STi I hope? cause if not you are screwed

You know what I have always wanted to try? I would like to buy a spare drivers-side sun visor, cut it open, and tuck my detector into it. The RD would probably be too thick to fit entirely inside, but you could at least do it so that, when viewed from the driver's seat, there is nothing there. To gain access to the detector you just flip the visor down and pop it out of its little hiding spot. It would be nearly ideal from a radar sensitivity standpoint, though not optimal from laser.

yeah, i got the Sti. i never thought of the head rest, that might be an idea. do the RD's get hot after a while?

Yeah typically they can get very hot. I don't know if I'd do a headrest...

I'd say it isn't a Saab since no way would you be able to fit an RD in a Saab headrest

A few oter people have come up with some inginues setups. Sounds as if you can do this setup as long as you set it on dark mode, no need for drivers to see some odd display. I assume you would mount high on the back window as well. As far as laser, anything can happen, it might detect it might not, but then again that is typically the norm so be on guard.

Again as said it depends on the type of car, some have succesfully mounted it high against the head liner.

Mounting it directly on the rear window (ie with suction cups) and not hiding it extremely well would be not advisable. It would be much more noticeable than on the windshield.

i thought my username would have gave it away, but i drive a p.t. cruiser turbo gt. I might try the headrest idea if the RD will fit. If not, i will mount on the high on the rear windshield. I think if done properly and the tint is dark enough, it will work. i'll make the whole window black! tinting around the RD of course. i'll tell you what worries me is when the LEO's are on overpasses doing laser, they can see down in your car! your whole dash would be visible.

i seriously wonder if most of the LEO's are actually driving around looking for radar detectors in vehicles. thats takes work! do you think they care that much? i don't know. i've been looking recently and i have yet to see a vehicle with an RD.
