possession of RD in ontario

leaving tomorrow for a few days in toronto. We will cross the border at detroit and re-enter the same way. I am aware that the RD is illegal in ontario. If I tuck it away in my luggage and keep my mouth shut i think I should be OK. I won't try to use it until I get back to Michigan.

Canada Customs doesnt enforce Ontario`s Provincial Highway Traffic Act. They`re there to enforce federal customs and immigration laws.

You could leave your detector in plain sight in the middle of the windshield, they wont give it a second look. The police however will happily take it away from you and give you a nice yellow ticket for a couple of hundred bucks in return.

Take it down and you`ll have nothing to worry about. You`re not entering some Communist state where they rip through every vehicle just for the hell of it. Plus, you`ll notice that traffic moves quicker in Ontario than most US states anyway. 75-80mph rarely gets you a second look from the cops.

My 9500ix and my extra GPS were wrapped in a blanket in a compartment in the trunk under our luggage. If they noticed they didn't say anything. After this little adventure we were ordered into a building were we were questioned at some length about our intentions. Welcome to Canada "eh"

The only thing I can think of that might have looked suspicious were the 2 unoccupied child seats in the back of the car. We have 2 grandsons and my wife refused to let me remove the seats before we left. Maybe they thought we were up to something. Otherwise it was a great trip.

Ahem. Well I'm afraid you hit the nail on the head about the child car seats. Canadian Customs is extremely touchy about child abductions. There have been several cases where kids were abducted and taken abroad (U.S., Mexico, etc.) by estranged parents.

Shortly after buying my current car back in the fall/winter of 2008, I was crossing the border from Canada to the US with an old friend for a new years related trip to Boston. We're both Canadian citizens, have never had a problem with the law, but I guess two young guys in a 2 seater convertible sports car (Saturn Sky redline) warranted a similar experience or having the car searched.

Honestly, they both went "cool" when they opened up the trunk (trunk and hood reverse open). Almost felt like they were just giving us a hard time and checking out the "cool" car then it was a legitimate stop.
