Where is the radar unit? All I see is a blurry screenshot from a video, with what appears to be an MDT display and a Federal Signal brand light/siren controller above it.
Judging by the caption, I think the video is about an ALPR, which I have personally never seen hooked up to radar, but I guess it is possible.
Decatur Genesis II
Hi Jim. I was afraid that w/o your unique expertise nobody else would be able to come-up with a proper and exact answer anytime soon. Jerry as well, but I'm not sure he's still browsing this forum anymore. Thank you very much for your prompt reply.
Looked it up on their website AFTER your reply:
Dash Mounted Radar | DecaturElectronics.com
And found out the device can be ordered with K-band or Ka-band antenna, therefore two additional Qs for you please:
1) why do you think our OPP went for a K-band and not Ka-band antenna? Cheaper stuff or maybe some other technical reason I'm not yet aware of?
2) This is just out of curiosity, what Ka-band (for police forces that order the Ka antenna) frequency this Decatur Genesis II runs on? I think Ka 35.5 but I might be wrong, MPH is with Ka 33.8 and Stalker with Ka 34.7, right?
Very Happy you're still around, alive and well.
Be safe out there.
Chris

Personally if I was in LE, I'd go with the K band too, cheaper and people are turning K off and RD users ignore it when they hear it initially assuming it's a door alarm/speed sign if in an unfamiliar area. KA is a dead give away![]()
Wonder why K-band antennas are cheaper than Ka, just older technology and nobody buys them anymore or maybe some other technical details I'm not aware of?
HUGE mistake to turn K-band OFF, still lots of police forces using K-band antennas, the good thing 100% of ALL Police Forces covering major urban areas are using Ka-band antennas and b/c 99.99% of all falses are X or K you'll know right away Ka alert is a real one. In Toronto area, out of hundreds of Ka 33.8 alerts (all Toronto Police) just 1-3 Ka falses coming from some very expensive BMW or MB dealerships. All banks, stores, condos, etc., on K-band only, probably X-band as well but personally I've turned OFF X-band long time ago, no more X-band in my area for at least 10 years I think.
The good thing with our OPP, they cover ALL major hwys in Ontario and obviously not many sources of false alerts on or around hwys, they have zero jurisdiction over any major Ontario city where Ka police radar is the king. And b/c RDs are illegal in Ontario, have been illegal for maybe 30 years, all Police Departments in Ontario use C/O only. Same like in VA, I guess.
From Buffalo, NY (border with Canada/Ontario) to Key West, FL, cannot recall any REAL K-band alert, all REAL Ka, 90% Ka 34.7.
