    Default Collision avoidance systems?

I have been seeing some commercials lately for cars with collision avoidance systems that warn drivers when they are approaching an obstacle too fast and will last minute brake if your about to hit something. Anybody have any idea how this system works? Is it judging distances via radar or laser? The commercial showed an example of a car driving the highway in the fog and the system could see a slow moving car on the highway through the fog. So I am doubting this is laser... Thoughts?

Either radar or laser. Infiniti uses a laser based system in the FX35/45 SUVs, these drive my V1 nuts. Some other mfrs use radar, some use a high frequency radar that's outside the range of police radar and thus doesn't set off RDs. Others may use regular X or K band.

I just found the VORAD site which is a collision avoidance system for semi trucks. Looks like it uses a combination of detection capabilities. Very cool stuff. The radar with VORAD is running at 24.725 ghz with front and side sensors to let the driver know if your along side of them. The forward radar says it looks out 350 ft. This is very cool stuff. What I was worried about was this technology causing problems with our RD's. Looking at the VORAD site it doesn't appear to be the case.

I don't know if the car technology they are advertising is like this or not.

It only reacts if you're going a certain speed over the car in front of you, so normal passing maneuvers shouldn't be affected. And then, it doesn't necesarily apply the brakes for you right away, instead it sounds an alarm and pressurizes the brake system so the brakes go on faster when you do mash them.

That's somewhat near the K band but far enough out from it so RDs shouldn't false on it, unless your RD is waaay out of tune.

haha, I thought you where talking about a TCAS system for cars. In our plane we have this and if we get to close to an other bird theres a big to do and write ups etc.

I dont think this would ever work for cars with the crazy drivers we have toda it would never shut up.
