Fixed Speed Camera Help

Hello everyone - I live here in New Zealand and just up the road from me is a fixed speed camera at the side of the road.Now when i approach this camera from the rear my rx65 lights up like a christmas tree from about 1/2 mile away on the X-Band - But if i approach the camera from the other way with the lens pointing at my vehicle my RD will not go off till i am a matter of feet away... Can anyone tell me why this would happen as i would of thought you should get the same reading either way and if anything the strongest would be with the lens of the camera facing towards you...Any help would be appreciated - Maybe a faulty RD...And keep up the good work on a great forum...

Can you get a picture of the camera to give us some clues or can you find a website somewhere that shows a picture of the camera type?

One of the tricky things about these radar cameras is the angle at which they are shooting across the road. Not sure about the specifics in your case, but if it is at a large angle then it's no surprise that you can't pick it up when coming towards it (they're also tricky by shooting it from up high at an angle downwards too sometimes). Now the reason why you are picking it up the other way could be caused by many things (though I am not an expert - which there are many on this board who will probably respond later, I just figured I would throw my 2 cents in). The most obvious thing that could cause this are reflections off of cars getting hit. Radar is pretty focussed out of the gun, but once it hits an object like a car it is gonna be spread out a lot more. Anyways, I hope this little info helps while we wait for someone who has more experience to respond.

I found this on an internet site regarding NZ fixed speed cameras - so now i am wondering why the x- band on my RD goes off when i approach one....

By now, most of you will be aware of the installation of the, fixed, pole-mounted speed cameras. The following information is intended to confirm, in some cases, or to enlighten those not so aware, of the method of operation of these cameras.
As foretold by Clearway as early as 1993, they do not operate by Radar or Laser and, therefore, radar detectors will not alert you to their presence, as these cameras do not send out a radio signal that can be detected.

From everything I've read we don't have X band in use by our police force, you can switch it off. Is there perhaps another source, other than the pole cam, which I believe uses Ka.

I have the RX65 and had this problem too. Go into your radar setup and turn everthing off, apart from Ka, Laser & SWS. These are the only bands used in NZ. Remember too, if you are driving along in the country or are the only car around and Ka starts to beep, PAY ATTENTION, cos it could B INSTANT ON getting used.

nz fixed cameras / on a pole work on pressure bars on the road so no rd will pick them up
as 4 the signal you r getting must be something else

have not heard of the sws/message service been used here in nz ...any way this is not going to get u a ticket
