Hello, this is my second post on this forum. I am currently looking into the Escort 8500 X50 and read the whole 2005 radar test review. They said the X50 had better laser than the RX65 Pro, but not as good as the V1. However, it didn't have as many false alarms as the V1 or RX65. Obviously most of you guys would recommend the X50 to me. I'd love to get the V1, but I really don't feel like spending $100 more than the X50 and I don't like the sound of programming the V1 compared to the X50. My one question was, I've heard that the X50 laser goes off sometimes when the horn is honked. Any insight on this? Thanks.

I've heard of a couple cases of this (horn false alarms), but it doesn't seem to be a wide spread chronic problem.

The V1 is a fine detector, as is the X50, but as far as laser, understand that in reality, 99% of the time, laser detection on a RD won't help you when your being hit by laser...you won't outbrake the Lidar gun's ability to capture your speed.

You may be able to pickup laser scatter from cars in front of you being lasered, or reduce the level of IR your car reflects to maybe buy you some time, but these 2 things alone are not adequate defenses.

There are a lot of good posts on this site regarding the topics you are concerned with, be sure to do a search.

Thanks for the help. I have already searched a bunch and learned a lot too. I've heard that VEIL helps with the laser. So basically I'm to assume that, without VEIL, laser can get even the V1. In that case, I will probably end up going with the X50 since it offers almost all the same performance of the V1, save laser, for $100 less.

Yeap, even with the V1, you still can get hit by laser and get a ticket. By the way, how often do you honk your horn?????

Laser can get your speed as quick as 3-tenths of a second, that is quicker than you can even take your foot off the gas.

Veil for lights and LaserShield for Plates are used to compliment a laser jammer, definently not replace one.

If you don't have a lot of chrome or other highly reflective surfaces and if you have a dark colored car with Veil and LaserShield, you may be able to buy a little extra time before being clocked by Lidar from a distance.

Not often at all. I was just concerned because with my luck, I'll use the horn right when I'll feel the most threaten that a cop is near. Plus it seems like an annoyance considering these are the "top of the line" radar detectors.

I own a couple X50's and have never had any issues of any kind.

The problem is more likely due to something involving the vehicle than a defect in the RD itself.

Since you also live in Illinois, I was curious to know what band you get hit with the most. Does Illinois use a lot of laser? Also, what part of Illinois do you live in? Thanks.

As far as Radar in Illinois, I encounter K band radar ~50% of the time, Ka ~45% of the time and X band about 5% of the time.

You will find a lot of Lidar on the highway used by the State Police, 98% of my laser encounters are on the highway.

The city of Chicago uses a lot of Lidar on Lake Shore drive.

Large towns with plenty of money and high traffic also use Lidar. The one's I know for sure that use laser are Schaumburg, Roselle, Tinley Park, Oak Brook and Orland Park. Towns similar to these will likley utilize Lidar.

I have lived in the City, the North, Western and Southern suburbs of the City, I am currently in the southern suburbs of the city.

Hello, I'm also new and debating x50 or rx65 and I though I read the rx65 does a bit better with Ka than the X50. Isn't that better since Ka is used more?
