    Default RMR-C430 in Ontario

    Hi there...

I just picked up a RMR-C430 from a buddy in KY when I was on vacation. We tested it onroute driving back from KY to Ontario where we live.... I didn't have any time to do any research and am now wishing I had of (based on feedback from the forums here).

Everyone says the Rocky Mountain Radar units are terrible....

Here's what I can conclude at this point and just wanted some more feedback:

They will effectively pickup radar in K, Ka, X bands along with laser.

The unit does not work well in stealth/scrambing modes so basically when I pickup a radar, turn the unit off - don't trust it??

I'm trying to find out if I can still use the unit or whether I should stick to not using it because I will be detected for sure...?? If it only works well as a radar detector but the other functions are terrible then I just want to know...

Also, does anyone know what the OPP uses for RDD (I'm in Peterborough). I want to know what can be used to avoid being picked up by RDD (it sounds like this unit is supposed to be undetectable but does anyone know for sure?)

    Thanks!

Well it actually works very poorly as a radar detector and as any kind of jammer it is totally ineffective.

They are also easily spotted by Spectre RDD units. Your best bet is to turn off the unit immediately after recieving a signal and slowing down.

It may work somewhat for you in the detection area, however pretty much any "radar detector" on the market will give you much better performance.

If you get stopped just show the cop your detector...No chance in court since they'd first have to prove RMR produces something that works...

    Default RMR C430

OK... that's a quick decision maker then...

So if I was buying and wanted something "middle of the line" what should I look for? I'm looking for something that works well here in Ontario, Canada but also something undetectable if possible (they're illegal here as I'm sure you know).

I don't want to invest heavily into one as if I get busted I'll lose it anyways...same time you get what you pay for

BEL STI is the only unit that is undetectable by Spectre RDD. But it'll cost you...

There's no middle of the road as far as stealth in concerned. If the price tag of the Sti is too much you might want to consider a cordless Solo S2 for quick stashing but you pay a penalty in detection range.

V1s and the RX65s are relatively stealthy but they're not cheap either.

I understand that the Peterborough area is agressively policed so they most certainly will use the Spectre. The trouble with quieter rural roads is they are ideal for Spectre since you dont have multilane traffic to hide in.

Also remember that once you buy your STI or use any unit every time a LEO shoots you in the back and you tap the breaks creating break lights it will be a dead giveaway that you have a radar detector.
You will need to make a break light toggle switch to eliminate that but don't forget to turn it back on after a LEO encounter as switches can formally introduce you to the person behind you.
Also since your detector is illegal, if you run an expensive detector make sure you have a crappy one to hand over to the LEO.
Maybe that is where the RMR can come in handy.

Might as well put a jelly doughnut on your dash.

No wait.... that'll just attract the cops.
