    Default Radar and Tints...

    Hey,

I have been trying to find our for a while whether tints affect your radar.

So far I have come to the conclusion that metallized tints *will* severly hinder your radar detector. I dont know, however, if normal tints (especially 5% +15%) will mess with your radar or not. I have recieved a number of different answers. Some say it does not affect it at all, other say that it most definetly it does.

Anyone have any ideas with some solid proof?

My blue tint, not sure if it is metal or not, hasn't affected my range that I can tell.

As for the poster I think just the glass alone effects performance absorbing a minimal amount of energy, thus why externally mounted radar detectors have the advantage.

Now if the tint has some form of metal in it then yes there are going to be problems, not huge, but enough to warrant you move the radar detector.

I have a blue tint on the top of my windshield and it has affected my range. I had to place it just below it.

it all depends on the make of the tint and how much metal it has!

according to mike valentine he says
Some tint films also have metallized layers. Car and Driver supplied samples from Wal-Mart (Axius brand) and AutoZone (Gila brand). The Axius films have no effect on radar reception in our tests.

However, the Gila package claims its films have metallized layers, and our tests of Gila films produced the significant radar loses we associate with metallized films.

WARNING: V1's Radar Locator depends on the rear antenna having an unobstructed view back through the interior of your car. Metallized films on side and rear windows will confuse the Radar Locator.

the only true way to find out if your tint band does affect radar detection is to do tests with a radar sorce, a good one is a supermarket door....

drive into the radar range with the detector mounted behind the tint and not behind the tint..

any detection variations with the detector behind the tint will show up..
