Antenna and range question

I've been thinking about investing in a scanner but the only thing stopping me is maybe some range issues. I just got an 06 altima and I dont want a nasty antenna stickin out of my car like some kind of tumor. So my real question is... Are their any scanners strong enough that I will not need an antenna? or do these things get poor range? Does anyone know of an antenna that may be mounted in a more discrete location w/o losing range?
