Default Signal Stalker/Close Call and Digital

With digital coming online in more places, will Signal Stalker and Close Call on an analog scanner still work on these digital transmissions? I don't really care what they are saying I just want to know if there is the possibilty of a cop transmitting close to me. Since they will be transmitting on the same frequency be it digital or analog, the scanner should pick up the "close" transmission even if I can not understand the transmission because it's digital. Is this correct?

Yes and these are nice features on the 996T.

So what type of range can I expect on a Rat Shack PRO-162 made by Uniden? I am using the original mounted antenna on the radio. I am trying to get this to work like a BearTracker. I assume an external antenna would be better. I would be happy with a 3 mile range like the BearTrackers claim to have.

Range depends on many things so it's impossible to say what range you will get. An external antenna is always better, especially in a car or up high. Make sure your antenna has a good ground plane connection.

Bear trackers work by listening for the repeater signal between a cop's hand-held and their car. Not all police departments have repeaters. And for those that do, not all cops will leave the car repeater on when they are not out of the car. So, it will not alert you all, or even most, of the time when a cop is around. The three mile range is just an estimate. The hand-held signal is not strong so the range is limited. Having said all this, if you are in an area like mine, the BearTracker feature is useful.

As far as the Pro-162 is concerned, I don't think that it has BearTracker. You will need to find out the auto repeater signal frequencies in use in your area and plug them into scanning channels on your radio. When you pick one up you will hear the cops talk but you won't be able to get an alert (a beep) when the signal is detected.
