    Default Bit the bullet

I'm not happy about it, but I bought a Little Will. Found one for $30 shipped off eBay. I will definitely be blacking it out.

But hey, took my first road trip with my crappy little antenna that I grabbed from Luv's last week and already got my first "bear alert."

He already had someone pulled over but still, it was kinda neat. It helped that I was behind a couple of oversized load escort trucks that chatted back and forth.

With the Little Wil, it will be like a whole new world to you... for its size its an unbelievable antenna.

Its money well spent (though I always try to shy away from ebay for any electronics).

Yeah, well, I just had this cheapy $14 antenna from Love's that I grabbed just to have something before I ordered a real antenna. I had ordered that Firestik DS-14 (14 inch roof mount) no ground plane antenna, thinking with a ground plane it may work even better. But firestik's own website says it's really an antenna of last resort. So I've got to find someone on eBay or Craig's list who will take it. I certainly want something better than what I have now. I don't know if it's just b/c there are less folks w/ CB's now or it's just super horrible, but I remember back in the early 90's, when there seemed to be a mini renaissance in CB in my hometown, having crappy antennas and getting much more traffic on the road than I heard today..... I still don't know how Little Wil is gonna look on a SAAB 9-5, but oh well.

It's in and on the car but I am still waiting for an SWR meter I ordered to come in to tune it up. Honestly, I about sh*t a brick when I got it out of the package. It seemed bigger than I thought it would be. But on the car it's not that bad. It certainly won't be too bad with a coat of flat black. Yep, I'll make sure to do that before I tune it. I'm already getting the jones for a peaked and tuned Cobra 29....

Same way I felt when I got mine. Looked really big in the package, but after blacking and installing it, I like it fine now. The range increase alone will make you love it. Always that trade off, want to look good or you want to use your radio. I had a thru the glass before the Wil. No comparison.

It's not bad at all. Heck, people always seem to think I am an undercover cop anyway, so no big deal. I installed my CB in a hidden position next to the B-pillar beside my seat but I think I am going to go ahead and mount it under the dash so that I am not blindly feeling around for the dials and taking my eyes off the road to switch channels. I also need to ground it.

Yea, I got my handheld scanner plugged into my stereo right now, and I'm always having to fiddle with the squelch and volume as well as look down at the display to see what Talk ID is keying up if I don't recognize the dispatcher. It's a pain, and that's with it right in the front.

X3 You couldn't imagine the look on my face when my Wilson 1K with extended 'whip' came in... Just unreal, but so is the performance.

Having a real 'whip' is just worth it... I love being able to 'hold' a conversation with oncoming truckers on the thruway, not just a 'HI/BYE'. Not to mention truckers going 'with my' traffic...

IMO an effective CB set-up is the most underrated, and certainly underused countermeasure there is for highway/interstate/thruway driving.

Definitely. And there is no substitute for quality antennage. None. The crappiest CB out there running through a hole-mounted Wilson will outperform the best CB with a crappy antenna. It's clear where your money is best spent.
