I have the Cobra 19 and it is an ok starter CB. What I don't like is that when powered up it starts on channel 1, ok till you forget to reset it. I like the Uniden 520 for a good starter radio. I just ordered a new Galaxy 919. I think I will love it.

Is the Galaxy 919 a compact? And how does it compare in size to a 19?

You will, I have one of its big brothers: A 959... you will love how much smoke you can poor out of the radio with a few decent mods.

It should be here in a cpl of days, paired with my Wilson should be a great combo.
    Cobra 19 - 6.7w x 6.9d x 1.9 around $40
    Galaxy 919 - 7.24w x 9d x 2.25 - $119.00

1st Step for that radio: (CVRob says this all the time: Power Mic!)

Since you have modulation controls though, be careful not to over modulate!

May be a good route for me to go. I'll have to measure and see if It'll fit.

Keep us posted when you get it!

The channel 1 bug is annoying (who has ever wanted that?), and maybe it was just mine, but it was so noisy that the squelch was nearly impossible to set without it chopping in and out all the time. After problems with my old 520 and these nifty "features" of the Cobra, I gave up on the small form factor radio, rearranged some stuff in my car, and got a Galaxy 979. I just installed it Saturday, and driving around town I've been picking up chatter on 19 in locations where I had never picked up anything before. And it's sooo quiet and clear. It's nice to have real hardware to work with finally.

    Isn't it something else...

You have the little brother to my CB! (Virtually the same CB though), as I have the 959.

Isn't it a world of difference between radios like the 510/Cobra 19 and the 979? All the extra bells and whistles (features)... unreal.

Well, the cobra 19 is all I know. What good are all the bells and whistles?

Give me a rundown. I don't know what all the modulation etc. does. I have RF gain and as far as I can tell it doesn't do squat...

    I'm looking for an excuse

Well my true suggestion to anyone looking for a CB is,,, get a good one to start with. Forgo the, I will get a starter. At least the Uniden 520, I like the backlighting as opposed to the 510. I say this to save you the time of getting a better one. Get a Wilson antenna. NO, you cannot get a small, cheap, handheld with a rubber duck antenna and talk to anyone. YES, you do need to set the SWR. Buy a ten dollar SWR meter so you can check it whenever you want. It is not that hard, if you cant do it you probably dont need to speed anyway. If you dont know the difference in a scanner and a CB, read and research. They are totally different. If you cant spend the time to do this, you will never run a scanner. I have them both and love them but they are not for all people. HMMMMMMM, rambling now, nuff said.
