    Default My setup

Hey guys, its been a while since I've been on here, so I thought I'd show you my shack. I'm also a member of Radioreference.com. Anybody else here a member???

EDIT: My scanner is a Radio Shack Pro-2055 and my antenna is a Radio Shack model as well. Its on a 25 foot pole. It gets decent range I suppose. It will pick up from 30 miles on a bad day, and on a good day somewhere around 50-75 miles.

Since you enjoy listening to the scanner go to my You Tube.

    YouTube - linkinpark9812

I have some interesting Scanner Audio on there. I will soon be putting a video on there of me going to a scene of a roll-over. (Kinda shaky video as it was cold, raining slush, windy, i was talking on my cellphone, etc.) lol

I have a Technician License as well. No i don't mind if you subscribe, I'm glad! lol

The main reason I got it is that Scanners are ILLEGAL while mobile unless u have that license (and some other exceptions that most ppl don't qualify for). It does not seem the local PD minds, but I heard that County and State sometimes enforce it, so idk. I am near some Crime-active cities (Hammond, Gary, etc.) so they pry enforce it somewhat.

I was thinking about getting a Yaesu FT-2800M. It is only $123 at Gigaparts

    http://www.gigaparts.com/store.php?a...ku=zys-ft-2800

However I plan on getting a Land-Mobile Radio that qualifies for transmission on most frequencies between 137 - 174Mhz (a lot more expensive, cheapest one is like $250 for mobile). That means if i transmit on my PD frequency IN A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY, the FCC (hopefully) won't get on my ass for not using a Type Accepted Radio, which is ALL Amateur Radios. The only illegal thing i did was transmit on an emergency frequency that i wasn't supposed. Hopefully when i say someone was t-boned by a pickup truck and their head was sticking out of the window bleeding, they won't prosecute.

I know a lot of Amateurs don't like it because you use non-type accepted equipment. That seems to be the most arguments on the topic "Transmitting on PD frequency in an emergency".

But ya, that would be your best bet for a Amateur Radio (for the car). Cheap and good quality.

Just get a good antenna and tune the SWR (and hard wire the Radio, most have to be anyways).

I absolutely agree with the emergency situation. It makes perfect sense. I want one because I plan on becoming a weather spotter for my area. Always wanted to do it, so I might just go for it. That does look like a nice radio indeed. Nice price as well! I was also looking at a Yaesu model VX 170. Its a handheld but will get me by so I can learn. Plan on taking my grandfather's call sign.

BTW, I didn't know it was illegal to scan mobile without a technicians license. Well, guess ya learn something new every day!

That is INDIANA LAW ONLY. Indiana has one of the most strict Laws on Scanners, I would say right behind New York's Law. There are certain exceptions. But the easiest one to become (out of the 10 of them) is getting an Amateur Licenses. Also, you said you wanted to become a weather spotter. If you get an Amateur Radio, you can only transmit on the HAM bands, so if that is what local weather stations monitor then you are fine. If they use other frequencies, and if they let you use them, you must get a LMRS (Land Mobile Radio Service) Radio. You can't just mod the HAM radio to transmit on other frequencies. FCC doesn't like that too well as it is not type accepted.

So just to clear that up, not sure if you will be using the Amateur Bands for Weather or not. I have a HAM radio (portable), but i probably should not use it in an emergency because it is not type accepted out of the HAM bands. Seems even in an emergency, you must have very good reason. I would say they go by "If using a cell phone would have caused any more serious harm to whatever emergency going on (aka 50-60 seconds longer than using the Radio) vs. the Radio, then they probably would let you off (hopefully), as you are communicating real time with officers and dispatch."

They pry would not jail you but they may fine you, take the equipment used, and suspend your Amateur License.

I guess it depends on the situation.
