Default How Strong is the Little Wil Magnet, and can you unscrew the whip?

I'm looking to get a little wil to replace my current peice of **** firestick antenna. It needs to have two requirements though, and I'm not sure if it does.

    1. It needs to be able to stay on the car at speeds of up to 120mph. If it came off, it would likely cause damage to my car and smash a window or something.

    2. The whip needs to be removable so I can unscrew it for daily driving and leave the mount on the roof of the car.

Is the Little Wil the antenna for me or should I look elsewhere?

The Little Wil magnet will hold at that speed. You cannot remove the whip without removing the set screw which would mean resetting the SWR each time you put it back on.

damn....any suggestions for a 3ft mag mount antenna that will satisfy those criteria? Even a 4ft one would work but 5ft is too big since it's mounted on the roof of a SUV.

Any roof racks or sunroofs in the way? What are you using for a CB?

I've got the Lil Wil and an SWR meter and no amp on a garaged car, to fit in the garage the whip has to come off. I set the SWR once. And marked it on the antenna. Then I just check it when I put the whip back on and am always close enough, and the process takes all of one mintue.

So yes you should take this precaution, but if you set it up right the first time and don't need a really low SWR for an amp then it shouldn't be that difficult to make it as effective as it needs to be. (Again assuming this is used as a 4w coutermeausre road info tool)

I've found that if you position the cable at the front of the magnet, then strategically run the cable to an entry point ahead of the antenna, the cable works well to hold the antenna at insane triple digit speeds. When you don't position it properly and it flies off, if you keep your speed up, the wind will actually hold the antenna against the site of the car. BTDT. (at the track)

My buddy Super Dave had his come off the trans am at 135. I suggest clear packaging tape to help hold it on if you anticipate doing big numbers.

I haven't found a mag mount that will stay on past 130 but it doesn't matter because the magnet deteriorates over time so it comes off at slower and slower speeds. You really need to go with some kind of permanent mounted antenna if you plan on cruising at any real speed.

Mine has stayed on at constant speeds of 125-133 but it's pretty new

Or if you can access the underside, place another magnet on the other side of the metal, basically like sticking two magnets between a sheet of paper, the paper does not matter only the magnets. Just remember to put N and S together, not N and N or S and S.

My firestick works fine. Not saying a Wilson wouldn't be better but is your SWR set correctly?

Truck drivers have said that my radio transmits OK and sounds fine over a couple of miles. I also have a noise cancelling power mic. I have no complaints about receiving traffic.

Just something to think about before throwing $$ at it.

I have a Cobra DX IV with a GOOD Wilson 18" coax hooked to a 3' Firestick.

My SWR was set in a field at the top of a hill with nothing around and the car doors closed. I had crappy performance until I got this worked out.

Yea, I wan't a Lil' Wil too but my setup works pretty well.
