Default Radio Shack Pro-107, GA State Police System

My wife actually got me something cool for our anniversary this year. I got home yesterday and she had bought me the Pro-107. It's not digital but it's alot better than my Old Uniden 50 channel scanner. I had a question about the Georgia State Police trunked system. How do you make it so you only hear things that are close to you not everything in the state.

GSP is conventional except for the ATL area. I mostly just monitor channels 1-4 and most of what I receive is on 1 (dispatch).

Oh yea, the 107 is a pretty neat scanner!

She made a great choice! I have a Pro-107 and love it.

So are you looking to program just your own county, or use the Signal Stalker II function to pick up nearby transmissions (ie. a mile or so away)?

The user manual is must to read as far as programming it, but it's absolutely a breeze for newbies to program this device. The learning curve isn't very steep at all.

My biggest tip for highway cruising use would be to set it up with Ch19 trucker's channel in a dedicated playlist. Just go near a truck stop or interstate and use the signal stalker, then when you hear a trucker talking on channel 19 press pause, then save the channel, put it in a dedicated play list, rename the playlist something like "Ch19", and when you're cruising highways and interstates, play that playlist and you'll hear any heads up from the truckers about speed traps you're approaching. It's much better than just using the signal stalker method; cuz there's too much noise and interference with that, and you're constantly hitting skip or turning the volume down. This way you only have to tweak the squelch knob here and there.

Oh, and for the car, make sure you buy a magnetic external antenna for better reception of those trucker transmissions. I got one from radio shack and hear them up to several miles away. Cost me about 27 bucks a couple months ago. Magnet-mount mobile scanner antenna - RadioShack.com

For out of car use, you may wanna pick up the rat shack 800MHz rubber ducky antenna, cuz it's better than the stock.

I was actually going to program it for my trip from South Bend, IN to Atlanta. Then when I finally move to ATL in a few months I will have it to listen to the GSP.

Thanks for the tip about getting channel 19 on the play list. I already have a Lil Will I will get a adapter and use that. Does the signal stalker function work pretty well or are you always getting alot of static ?

You'll need a digital scanner to monitor GSP in Atlanta. They use the City of Atlanta's trunked system, which was migrated to P25 about a year ago.

Atlanta Public Safety (Project 25) System Trunking System, Atlanta, Georgia - Scanner Frequencies

There are a couple other areas where GSP have a talkgroup assigned to them on a citywide or countywide trunked system. As already said, though, it's mostly plain old VHF, and only a handful of frequencies. They do have mobile extenders, though, so if you pick that frequency up, you know there's one relatively close.

There is no statewide trunked public-safety system in Georgia. The closest thing is SouthernLINC, which GSP used for awhile but gave up on due to poor coverage. If you saw that "State of Georgia, Public Safety" listing on the radioreference database, that system is not active. I'm not even picking up a control channel anymore for that one.

If there was a statewide trunked system, it would be made up of multiple sites located throughout the state and networked together, and you would only hear talkgroups that are currently in use at the site you are monitoring. If you were in Atlanta, you would not hear radio traffic from, say, Savannah, unless somebody is using the Atlanta site to talk on a Savannah talkgroup.

Sure thing. Ah the Lil Will! Almost got one of those. Curious to hear how Lil Will+Pro107 gets public safety reception, if at all. That's the only reason I didn't get one.

Re the signal stalker, it works just fine, but when I'm in the car & mobile I pick up a lot of static, especially in rural areas. I don't think that's the scanner's fault; just like it's not the V1's fault that it's chatty. If there's a signal there, it'll find it. That said, when I've used it from home or other fixed location the static is much less of a problem.

I did some research and it looks like CB antennas are made to receive the 26.965-27.405 mghz band and most Police frequency's use alot higher frequency. So I will give it a try, but will probably end up getting a mag mount scanner antenna.

Try 458.4875MHz for the Mobile Extender freq for GSP
