    Default Scanner app on Android?

Theres an app on the android market called "Scanner Radio" by Gordon Edwards, and its rated very high. Is it a substitute for a real scanner? Cobra radar detectors are also rated highly :P

I use the scanner Apps for the Iphone... I think one is the exact same maybe... and they work well, but nothing like a real-scanner to use out in your car etc IMHO... more of a novelty so to speak.

There are online 'scanner channels' which are virtually the same thing on your computer...

Never been a huge scanner user (though I might be making my way there sooner or later)... but in my opinion the cool/fun factor outweighs the countermeasures factor by a large margin regarding the scanner apps for phone.

What I did before I had a decent scanner was I found the feeds on radioreference for my city and got the MP3 link, then I downloaded a streaming application to my phone and streamed the MP3 to my phone.

I use it. It's handy is Nassau County by me since their entire system is still available. Same with NJ State Police

Every time I have used scanner radio on my droid, it is pulling the info straight from radioreference....sounds very similar to what you were doing here.

Problem with most of those scanner broadcasts is that they actually do SCAN, meaning you are trying to follow multiple channels at once, with no ability to manually stop on a channel when you hear something you need to focus on. Consequently, what you get is a mish-mash of garbled radio traffic that is of absolutely zero use to you as a countermeasure, and even marginal use as a simple entertainment device. You'll be stuck listening to licence plates being checked, while on another channel, something interesting is actually happening. Your odds of getting anything useful out of it are about as good as getting a girl good enough to marry at a bar at 2am.

I think AirMoore said it best about scanner apps and SS about listening between plates and the really good stuff.

For the OP, the app may be the best way to go for him because it sounds like he doesn't have much time on his hands between school and tennis. A lot of the better modern scanners are a PITA to program and use if you're a newbie. I would listen to it on your phone just to see if your interested or go to radioreference.com and listen there.
