    Default new CB

What I may be interested in is a small compact but full featured CB. The last time I used a CB was the mid 1970s and i know there have been improvments in performance and compactness in the size of the CB- the thing that is still troubling me is that I see Antennas over 3' and would prefer a smaller antenna if it did not degrade the performance of the overall unit. Any experts out there with some thoughts if this is even possible. Thanks.

I've said this a million times.
IF you want performance, it (the antenna) should be both electrically AND physically correct.
That means a full size 1/4 whip....102 inch steel or 96 inch fiberglass. ANYTHING else starts to compromise. how much is your choice. I would go with a Wilson 1000 trunk lip mount. Go less and you might as well don't bother at all cause it will suck. Power is useless if you can't radiate it. I would consider a 10 meter radio converted to CB or an "export" type radio. The Rx/Tx is much better than a regular radio. Noise filtering makes it easier to tolerate. Be aware that the antenna needs a ground plane for the mirror image which happens to be flat metal like the trunk of the car. Some vehicles w/composite material or fiberglass have "'problems" with mobile installs.

Antennas set aside first. I am looking for a compact CB unit for space reasons but with still all the capabilities of the big boys.

The Galaxy 919 might fit your bill.

If I'm not mistaken, the Galaxy 979 is the same size, but also includes SSB. That may or may not be a consideration.
