Default Has anyone else ever done this?

So I wanted to rearrange some wires in my case for airflow and sometime during the course of cleaning and rearranging I managed todo this.

I broke the back bracing plates off the pins on my 1.5 TB drive. The drive on the top is my 10K raptor for system files and installed programs. The PCB on the bottom is from the seagate drive.
Tech support was of no help so i just pushed the pins as straight as I could then put the back plates back on, wedged them with a screw driver, and plugged the cables back in.

This actually worked quite well so I went copied all my data over with acronis and wiped the drive. Right now I'm just wondering what I should do with the crappy drive and with the new drive I have now. Im considering sending it in and getting a new one then copying the files back and returning the new one I bought, I still have all the original packaging including the plastic that goes over the box or run the HDDs in RAID 1.

has anyone else ever had this happen?

    Eeek.

I say send in the one with broken pins. The only thing I see is that it taking a little while, and you risking being denied credit from the place you bought the new one from because it's more than 15 days old, open package, 15% restocking fee, etc.

In the mean time, don't store any porn you're not willing to lose on the hardrive, if you use it.

The lack of integrity would keep me up at night.

LOL this happens many times with Seagate drives. Seagate now makes totally utter crap hard drives. I'm a network systems administrator, and I've seen this alot. Just put the cables back and hot glue them, it works perfectly. I have about 15+ Seagate drives like this still running. Next time, buy WD.

yea that was what i was afraid of because best buy only has a 14 day return policy; the opened package situation can be fixed with a little packing tape The only concern I have with sending it in or a swap and return is my data but I did 4 random overwrites and a zeroing so I think I should be ok.

porn is easily replaceable lol, so im not worries there. I am worried about my music, movies, and games I have on there.

Thats funny, I was told pretty much the same thing when I had 2 WD raptors fail on me from head crashes. "buy seagate they dont suck" My WD drives were bought, stuck in a cage in front of a fan, were never moved after that, and they still failed. They were from different batches too.

Hard drives are hit and miss. The only brand I have never had trouble with is maxtor, even when I sort of neglected or abused the drives. I actually still have a few IDE drives from before they were bought out that run like champs.

Raptors are a whole different animal. When they first came out I bought two 36GB and striped them in RAID 0 to get max performance. Well, one of them failed. But the other one is still going strong. I can pretty much guarantee that striped Raptors will go bad within one year. However, if you go with the Caviar line, you'll never look back, they are pretty much the most stable hard drives right now.

Seagate was the king in the past, then Hitachi, and now WD. Who will be the next? We'll just have to wait and see, but for now, go with WD.
