Default Hey California Guys and Gals...

The other day when my wife was ordering our new GPS unit, the site stated that in you are not allowed to attach anything to the windshield in CA. We are going to be in San Diego and LA in April, and since we will be driving from La to SD and back, I intend to bring along the GPS and V1. I have a method of mounting the GPS in whatever rental we get, but am I or am I not allowed to mount the V1 on the windshield with the suction cups? Just curious, any responses will be appreciated. Thanks!

You ok to do that. We have similar law here in Minnesota and I never had any problems.

Yeah basically a cop can go right by you and for the most part they really don't care, but you might get the rare one that has nothing better to do.

    So just be careful!

This is more or less one of those laws that is never enforced, but if you piss off the cop - be sure you're gonna get it.

You shouldn't have to worry about it.

You are not aloud to have anything obstructing your field of view... just about anywhere (RVM tree air fresheners included)... Are you going to get pulled over for it? No. If a police officer wishes to pull you over can he use that as an excuse to do so? Yes. Will he issue you a ticket for that? He is well within his rights to do so. As long as you are not a complete to the guy, and let them investigate whatever he wishes to (e.g. why you are coming from a 'no fishing' zone with several buckets in the back of the pickup), they normally won't waste their time with the paperwork.

Then again, as my professor (and chief of police) said, "I need a reason to pull someone over; but there isn't anyone on the road who I can't pull over within a mile if I want to."

The list of offences that an officer can stop you for is astounding...

    Default I wouldn't

I wouldn't worry about using your V1 in a rental car. Go for it man! Now, using suction cups in a semi truck or on the window in a car in Ontario is a no no.

There is a law here in California that you cannot have anything attached to your windshield. However, I have only ever heard of one person getting pulled over for it (radar detector) and he did not get a ticket.

It is very common to see GPS units suction cupped to windshields in SoCal, so you will not stand out in the least. I've been pulled over numerous times for a variety of reasons and I've never had the cop even mention the law.

Thanks, y'all. I think I will go ahead and chance it with the windshield mount for the V1. I appreciate all of your input.
