V1 vs 9500i
Hi,
I have always used the Escort 8500 X50 (Blue and Red) for the past few years. They dont seem to be very effective against laster, I just bought a V1 (I havent even gotten it yet). Is this really the "best" radar detector? Is it better than the 9500i? What is the difference (besides GPS) between 9500i and the 8500 X50? Thanks

Had the Escort 9500 i, returned it didn't like the over all range compared to my Bel RX65 and Valentine One, some seem to like it and others don't it's a personal preference. Try it for 30 days and if you don't like it return it.Originally Posted by JhnZ71
Difference is mainly features. You'll be fine with the V1. It's your personal preference that matters.
Thats what I thought, just add a couple features to the X50 and call it something new. Its also dumb that you cant get it with a blue display.
One can argue that its dumb to pay so much more for a blue display.
The V1 doesn't even compare to the others in laser performance. Just like its horrible at filtering out K band alerts. It doesn't have an automute like the belscorts either.
I tested mine and it detected KA at almost the same exact point as the rx65. Now in practice on rural interstates it is great. I wouldn't get one if I lived in a big city.

I am not knocking the 8500 X50, it is a solid detector. Ive used them for years, Ive just heard that the V1 is a little better against laster. This may or may not be true, main reason for changing is really because I wanted to try the V1.
This sounds stupid, but everytime i drive my car I look at the same thing. Lol, plus I want to see if the arrows are really all there cracked up to be.
The blue display is a waste of money, but so is a radar detector. Its pretty simple instead of spending 400 dollars so i can speed a little more i could just go the speed limit... F*ck that 8)
Maybe what I really should be asking is what is the difference between V1 and X50 and X50 and 9500i?
Are the actual detection capabilities any better or did they just add GPS and raise the price 130 bucks?

I am a new member to the website and I actually have recently bought both the V1 and the 9500i.
I figured it was just best to buy two of the "best" out there (yes, I realize not everybody considers the 9500i a "best" yet) and give them a go side-by-side.
I have hard-wired both of them and have them mounted at the top of my window, inside my 2001 Toyota Tacoma. This truck is far from an ideal environment for a RD, especially considering it's an extra cab with very dark windows in the rear.
I live in California so window-mounts are a big no-no (sigh) so I'm still trying to work out a "clean" way to mount both of these while I test them. (any suggestions by those of you fellow taco owners?)
I will be taking a trip from (literally) the North end of California to the Southern end of California over memorial weekend, a time I expect there to be a LOT of LEO's out there on I5, 395, and elsewhere.
It will be interesting to see which one ends up in my truck and which ends up getting shipped back for a refund. I'll report back my weekend adventure stats when I get back from the trip.
So far I have tested the 9500i through a 2 mile stretch of highway here in the Eureka CA region that has 3 speed signs (yes, I said THREE in TWO miles) that were put up a few years ago to try to reduce the speed. They also reduced the speed to 50 mph along the two miles, and enforce it hard. (sigh)
I made multiple passes through this two mile stretch of highway and an initial tests of the 9500i.
The first two runs where set on "auto" and the unit was mounted at dashboard level. The RD picked up two of the three ST's at less than 1/8th of a mile (I was basically on top of them before it registered a full ping).
I than mounted the RD at the top of my window and ran through the area two more times, each time it alerted me to them at 1/4 mile, and one of them (the last one) almost a mile away.
I than disabled the "auto" and switched the RD to "highway" (the "always on regardless of speed" settings) and I finally got some decent results across the board. It was only through this "Highway" Mode and mounted high in the window that I felt "save" from theses stationary speed traps.
Later this week I will perform the same tests on the V1 and report back those results. Based on everything I have read about the V1, I should experience a much longer notice from the V1 than I have the 9500i. That said, I do NOT look forward to the constant noise that the V1 produces.
I read a lot of people who say stuff like "it takes a long time for a new RD on the market to be trusted by the mass".... I am 100% untrustworthy of both the 9500i and the V1 at this point. I hope that by the end of the month, I can come back here and share that I've found one (or better yet, two) RD's I feel I can trust.
You're doing testing against a low powered, almost out of tune Radar gun. They are low powered to conserve energy so they will last longer.

Yea, I am with you man. I am looking for the best radar detector. Period. I dont care what brand it is or if it has arrows I just want the best one. From what Ive read everywhere the Valentine seems to edge out the Escort slightly. But everybody who has them is so brand loyal that you can usually never get a straight answer.
