    Default Heat and the V1.

I am gonna be getting a V1 soon and i was just wonderig how the V1 deals with heat. I have a Rx65 and i notice that not only do you have to worry about selfcal issues in the heat but also the detector is less sensitive in the heat. Is this also true with thte V1. Would it be fine to leave my V1 up on hot days or do these RDs also not like heat?
    thanks

From what I've seen in the FCC internal photos, it appears that the V1 is a very robustly constructed radar detector. Nevertheless, extreme heat ages electronics and could cause a V1 to drift a bit out of tune. In hot weather, I always take down whichever radar detector I am using when I park my car for more than 15 or 20 minutes.

If it is hot will it not be as sensitive? That is my main concern.

v1 with that metal casing gets insanely hot , you might actually burn fingers when trying to take it off so be careful.

I purchased my V1 last week. Before I hardwired it I called Valentine and asked this exact question - they said I have nothing to worry about. I explained I live in GA and the temp has been over 100 the last 3 weeks and they still said I had nothing to worry about.

Yeah that thing does get surprisingly hot. Definitely not comfortable to touch. Sometimes I park my car and put it in the locked glove box... and even then the thing is too hot. Just a hot ambient temperature seems to get that thing to near scolding temperatures.

Anyway, good to know VR says there's nothing to worry about from heat... even though I still bring mine inside with me when I'm leaving my car for an extended period.

I've bought a small padded nylon zippered case for each of my radar detectors. A small padded case does a very good job of keeping my radar detector fairly cool when I put it in my glove box for several hours when I park my car.

I have a V1, a 120v to 12v power supply, and air conditioned house, and one of those IR Temp guns.

I set my V1 up indoors (78-81 degrees) and powered it using the adapter.

After 24 hours of operation, the temps I measured on the top (it was sitting flat on it's bottom) were in the range of 99-103 degrees.

So yes, even out of the sun, and in a AC environment, it runs warm to the touch.

They do get hot to the touch on warm sunny days even with the AC on, Mounting in the vicinity of the tint strip, or mounting on the visor (which I find inconvienent) will help. As for leaving it in the car, I normally take it inside or hide it elsware in the car. Valentine says there operating tempetures range up to 158 farenhite, and that there storage temp can go up to 185 farenheite, but I don't want to be the one to test it out. I am sure they are good for it, but doing that every single day may cause premature drift or faliure.
